N.C. A&T College of Engineering Department Changes Name, Expands Curriculum

The newly renamed Department of Computational Data Science and Engineering (CDSE) at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is changing more than just its name. The updated master’s program, now called Data Science and Engineering, and the updated doctoral program, Computational Data Science and Engineering, both offer new courses and focuses relevant to the future of engineering disciplines.
N.C. A&T Engineering Senior Named a Winner of Poster Competition at National Conference

Mechanical engineering senior, Chelsea Wilson, had an extraordinary finals week at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. In addition to her many rigorous exams, she virtually attended and was named a winner of the Clean Energy Education and Empowerment (C3E) initiative conference poster competition.
The C3E recognizes outstanding women leaders and accomplishments in clean energy for the goal of closing the gender gap and increasing the participation, leadership and success of women in clean energy fields.
Seven out of 31 presenters were announced poster winners. For Wilson, this accomplishment confirms that whatever industry or educational path she pursues, she will excel.

According to a 2018 Pew Research Center analysis, Blacks represented only 9% of employees in STEM-related fields. One study has also shown that Black and Hispanic students either transfer or drop out of these programs at higher rates than white students. Researchers at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University are addressing these challenges by developing an assessment tool to measure historically Black colleges and universities students’ science capital and leverage the information to create strategies that enhance their motivation and retention in STEM.

The pandemic highlights disparities in access, including access to technology for young students who were thrust into remote learning. In response, leaders at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University established a virtual STEM academy for the summer and academic school year and provided laptops to 60 students at Allen Middle School after receiving a $50,000 COVID-19 relief grant from Verizon.

Addressing Diabetes-associated Health Disparities: A Wake-up Call Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic

According to the Centers for Disease Control, adults living with diabetes are at an increased risk of experiencing severe illness or complications when exposed to COVID-19. The disease is the seventh leading cause of death in the country and disproportionately affects minority ethnic groups and economically disadvantaged populations. Type 2 diabetes is driven by the obesity crisis. Obesity prevalence is especially pronounced in many Southeastern states, including North Carolina.
The North Carolina Diabetes Research Center (NCDRC), a consortium comprised of Wake Forest University, UNC-Chapel Hill, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and Duke University, hosted a successful virtual workshop for faculty members from academic research institutions in North Carolina and surrounding states during Diabetes Awareness Month. The focus of this year’s workshop was “Addressing Diabetes-related Health Disparities in Light of the COVID-19 Pandemic.” N.C. A&T leads the NCDRC Enrichment Program, which organized the workshop.

Today, that number has soared to nearly six million people. This month aims to increase the general public’s understanding of the disease, the impact it has on the person directly affected and their caretakers, and highlight potential care options and best practices.

Between protests for justice, and the health disparities laid bare by COVID-19, the need to address health and healthcare-related inequalities cannot be overstated. The College of Health and Human Sciences is answering this call by hosting in a two-day virtual symposium on Nov. 12 and Nov. 13 for A&T faculty, staff and students, faith communities in Guilford, Rockingham and Alamance counties, partners at Cone Health and NC Action Coalition, and community members. A team of undergraduate, graduate and faculty researchers in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University won a highly competitive $449,052 grant from the Department of the Navy’s HBCU/MI program to collaborate with the Navy on improving radio frequency (RF) communication systems. The research will use gallium nitride (GaN) device technology to create smaller and more efficient solid state-based RF amplifiers.
