Motivation
Ambient fine particulate matter (
PM
2.5
) is the leading environmental risk factor for the global burden of disease. Despite the importance of PM
2.5
, ground-based observations have insufficient coverage at the global scale to allow assessment of exposure to PM
2.5
SPARTAN
To address the current gaps in knowledge of global PM
2.5
concentrations, we are developing the grassroots Surface Particulate Matter Network (
SPARTAN
) to measure fine particulate concentrations to evaluate and enhance satellite remote sensing estimates of PM
2.5
. The network provides publicly available data on PM
2.5
mass, chemical composition, and optical
characteristics
for connection with satellite remote sensing and for air quality management.
