P.Cair.Zen. IV 59538 (TM 1174), dated to 16 January of 257 BCE, is a fragmentary papyrus from the Zenon Archive that preserves the final part of a letter. Along with a significant part of its content, the identity of both its sender and addressee has been lost. However, a careful analysis of the material aspects of the letter reveals that its author and scribe can be identified with Amyntas (TM Per 769), the administrator of the Alexandrine household of Apollonios.

Drawing upon Dietler’s concept of «commensal hospitality», this work examines the roles played by commensals at these banquets, as well as the implications of inviting and being invited to a feast. Its objective is to assess the extent to which the celebration of feasts, the issuing of invitations, and the attendance to these feasts may relate to an attempt made by hosts and guests to acquire and increase their prestige and reputation within the group.

[The aim of this article is to present the papyri and ostraca collected by Eduard Toda in Egypt between 1884 and 1886, during his tenure as Spanish vice-consul in Cairo. Drawing from the copies of inventory of the collection made by Toda and some of his publications, we have tried to determine the exact number of pieces, their nature as well as their current whereabouts. After the analysis of the provenance and acquisition circumstances of these ostraca and papyri, we discuss Toda's interest in these pieces of his collection.

P.Monts.Roca inv. 908 fits the left hand side of col. 1 of the decree. For the other two fragments (P.Palau Rib. inv. 172 c-d) we tentatively suggest that they belong to the same document, mainly for paleographical reasons and because they belong to a collection where other fragments of the same document are found. Although this paper does not provide many new insights into the text of the decree, it confirms that the sources for the Cologne, Roca Puig, and Palau Ribes collections of papyri were the same.

The letter was written by two different hands: part by its nominal author, Amyntas, and part by a professional scribe. The study identifies and describes the distinct handwriting styles, their features, and the implications for the letter’s production process. It suggests that Amyntas did not merely dictate letters but revised and added to them personally, indicating a two-stage writing process involving dictation to a scribe followed by authorial review and addition.
