Seeking to appear cogent and communicative, rather than self-evident or detached, is one of the main features of academic writing which has mostly gone unnoticed or devalued by some novice and even seasoned writers (Adel, 2006; Hyland, 2005a; 2005b). Thus, this study set out to explore how authorial presence markers work in the introduction and method sections of 50 research articles and 50 graduate thesis proposals. The coding process included the identification of I, my, me, we, us, our, self-citations, and meta-comments in the as well as assigning appropriate pragmatic functions based on the categories suggested by Hyland (2002) and typologies proposed by other researchers in this regard (e.g., Harwood, 2005; Sheldon, 2009; Vessileva, 1928). The results revealed that we should not ascribe similarities to the concerned genres in relation to strategies employed by writers. More precisely, whereas academics tended to connect themselves to their writings, students are inclined to be more cautious about situating their own views and arguments in the text through personal authorial references. The study does not suggest that writers extend and generalize research findings but rather invites academics and researchers to make a connection between elements of the study and their own experience.

more
Given the significance of Book Reviews (BRs) and the fact that little has been devoted to the study of this genre, the current study investigated the macrostructure as well as the politeness features of a sample of BRs, representing two periods of time (1980-1990/2000-2010), in applied linguistics. The main purpose of this analysis was to identify the macrostructures and the politeness strategies in the "closing evaluation" section of BRs. The dataset consisted of 80 BRs (40 extracted from the journals published in the 1980s and 40 derived from the journals published in the 2000s). The findings demonstrated no major quantitative differences between the moves exploited in the BRs, except for move 3. Further, positive politeness strategies, characteristic of the "closing evaluation" section, revealed no significant differences deployed in the two groups of BRs, and negative politeness strategies were absent, indicating the non-alignment of these latter strategies to BRs. The analysis of BRs can contribute to both the schema theory and discourse analysis. The study may provide a valuable framework for a comprehensive book review analysis. Book reviews are usually written by the authors who have published several articles, notes, and letters, and they do continue to have more publications (Nicolaisen/Frandsen 2007). From a pedagogic perspective, being the easiest and quickest way to publication, BRs are a good way to enhance the students' writing and analytical skills, learn how the journal publishing process works, and get to know editors (Belcher 2010). Therefore, the review, as part of an academic journal, is an essential genre in not only defining and legitimizing the discipline, but also in legitimizing participation in the professional culture of the discipline (Hyland 2004). more
Some English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners avoid speaking and do not participate in class presentations because they are afraid of not being cohesive in speaking. In coping with such a problem, some crucial solutions of using the patterns of cohesion in speaking are required to teach the learners of English how to be cohesive in speaking. An appropriate task in this regard was studying and analyzing native contexts. The interpretation could be taken from exploring some class presentations that occur in an English native context. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the cohesive patterns used by native speakers of English in 8 class presentations which are taken from Michigan Corpus of Academic Spoken English (MICASE). The analysis began with the collection of the data, which is the transcription of the class presentations. Then, the patterns of cohesion-reference, conjunction, ellipsis and substitution-were identified. After tabulating the findings, they were discussed to see how native speakers of English use these patterns of cohesion in making their speaking more textual in interaction. The findings showed that the native speakers of English in class presentations frequently used reference, conjunctions, and ellipsis, and they rarely used substitutions in the class presentations. The findings could be taken out to act as a model to guide EFL students to use these patterns to be more cohesive in their class presentations.

more
This study aimed to investigate the generic structure of the discussion sections of Applied Linguistics research articles (RAs) published in a representative sample of local (Iranian) and international journals. The main purpose of this analysis was to identify the move structure of RA discussions in the above mentioned discipline and to see if non-native English researchers publishing in local journals produce texts that are rhetorically different from texts produced by researchers publishing in international journals. The data comprised 80 RA discussions (40 from local and 40 from international journals) which were analyzed by incorporating Dudley-Evans' (1994) model. The findings demonstrated no major quantitative differences between the moves utilized in the two groups of RAs except for move 5 (Reference to previous research). The lower frequency of references in local RA discussions indicates that the writers of these RAs may not consider the significance of relating their findings to those reported in the previous research. Finally, a revised version of Dudley-Evans' (1994) model is introduced.

more
Writing a master's thesis, oftentimes the first shot by a novice researcher at writing for academic purposes, requires providing a framework and support by learning how to cite the works of others. Compared to the host of studies on research article introductions as the product of expert writing, little work has been done on citations in master's thesis introductions (MAIs), and so the paucity of research in this area calls for further investigation into citations in MAIs. To this aim, we compared the use of citation forms in 65 Iranian MAIs in the field of Applied Linguistics. Citation forms were divided into integral which play an overt grammatical role within a sentence and non-integral which play a covert grammatical role in text. Each category was further divided into sub-categories. Analyses of the citation practices indicated that integral citations constituted a greater proportion of citations in the MAIs. The study also examined stance manifested in verb controlling citations and underlined the importance of evidential marking in academic writing and discussed pedagogical implications of the research.

more
Drawing on a Symbolic Interactionist perspective and the Grounded Theory methodology, this study aimed to explore self-denigration from the perspective of Iranian applied linguists highlighting the significance of self-denigration as an in-group relational ritual in Iranian doctoral defense sessions. The data were obtained from rigorous coding of the transcripts of two focus groups and a questionnaire built on the findings of the focus group discussions. The findings indicated significant gender differences in terms of the participants’ attitudes toward the functions and meanings of self-denigration. Academic experience was also found to be an important factor in how the participants perceived self-denigration. Through a meticulous analysis of self-denigration in doctoral defense sessions, the present study sheds light on the norms and conventions of the academic discourse of defense sessions, thereby justifying the rights and obligations of the defense session participants.

more
Using the methodology of Grounded Theory, this study aims to identify and analyze the perceptions and functions of self-denigration in dissertation defenses. The data comprises transcripts of two focus group discussions and the disputation sections of a corpus of 53 applied linguistics doctoral defense sessions gathered from 14 Iranian state universities between 2019 and 2021. The findings suggest that self-denigration depends to a great extent on the role of the participants in a disputation, and it is used before or after a criticism or a response to criticism. The analysis of the data revealed that self-denigration as a sign of respectfulness and modesty in a defense contributes to social decorum, diffidence, coercive self-deprecation, contrived modesty, or flamboyance. This study highlights the importance of self-denigration in the oral academic discourse of EFL defense sessions and has pedagogical implications for oral academic literacy practices.

more
This study traces the evolution of computer-assisted language learning (CALL) by investigating published research articles (RAs) in four major CALL journals: ReCALL, Computer Assisted Language Learning, Language Learning & Technology, and CALICO Journal. All 2,397 RAs published over four decades (1983–2019) were included in the pool of data, and the Google Scholar citation metric was adopted to assess the impact of the papers. By selecting the top 15% of widely cited papers from each individual year, we minimized the time bias between years, enabling a balanced narration of the history of CALL through a representative dataset of 426 high-impact RAs. To identify the evolution of research trends, the contexts, methodologies, theoretical underpinnings and research foci of all 426 RAs were investigated using NVivo 12 and AntConc. The analysis of the data yielded encouraging results such as the upward trend in the number of publications and the international reach of CALL in the last two...

more
The present study investigated the efficacy of task types on the vocabulary learning of Iranian learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) whose opportunities for communication outside classroom context are limited. Moreover, the effectiveness of using Task-based Instruction (TBI) was investigated in this study. Data were collected from three classes of lower-intermediate high school students who were selected on the basis of availability and were taught for eight weeks. Each class was taught through one of three different task types: information-gap, opinion-gap, and reasoning-gap. The results of an achievement vocabulary test administered to the students of the three groups at the end of the instruction and a qualitative think-aloud report protocol analysis showed that the reasoning group outperformed the other two groups. Implications of the study are proposed for teaching and learning English as a foreign language in Iran.

This study attempted to address the issue of how to incorporate formulaic sequences into English forms of Islamic instructions through the medium of high-tech media. To this end, formulaic representation of Islamic culture-based materials, consisting of 90 vocabulary items similar to the words and phrases used in Islamic cultural settings. They were integrated with multimodal cell-phone delivery of cued and non-cued content accessed by 218 Iranian male and female high-school juniors at a pre-intermediary level of English language proficiency. The participants were placed into four different working memory (WM) ability groups, using visual and verbal WM tests, via the short message service (SMS) and multimedia messaging service (MMS) in 18 virtual didactic sessions. Upon treatment, after the end of each virtual session, they were formatively evaluated on their recognition and recall of L2 vocabulary through the mobile-assisted testing module (MATM). The results indicated that except ...

The present study aimed to find out thematic organization and progression in the argumentative writing of Iranian learners of English, representing two levels of language proficiency, and the introduction section of published Research articles (RAs) of Applied Linguistics. For this aim, 60 articles were downloaded from three journals and also 92 MA and BA students majoring in English Language Teaching and English Literature were selected. Then, three topics were used for gathering data from them. Of the written argumentative compositions, only 67 were chosen for the next phase of the study. These compositions together with the RAs were analyzed based on Halliday’s (1985) model of thematic structure and the revised model of Danes’ (1974) thematic progression patterns. The results of Chi-square suggested that there was a significant difference in the thematic structure of the essays written by MA students and the introduction section of RAs. It was concluded that thematicity can be ef...

Introduction: No longer thought to be value-neutral, textbooks and other materials used in language learning, generally, present a certain way of looking at the world. With technology development, developing materials for delivery through the medium of new wireless technology seems indispensable.Materials and Methods: Some new English vocabulary items were adapted to be delivered via mobile to 225 Iranian male and female juniors at the age range of 16-17 during 18 virtual sessions, using both visual and verbal cues. Both formative and summative tests were employed to assess the progress of the participants in the study. In addition, a Likert-type attitude questionnaire was prepared and sent to the students through the medium of text messaging (SMS) to be filled. The collected data were analyzed, using descriptive statistics through SPSS software, version 20.Results: The qualitative and quantitative data analysis revealed the significant effect of cued materials on language learning in mobile-enhanced settings. Conclusion: The multifaceted nature of materials design calls for the inclusion of mobile assistance as wireless technology to facilitate materials presentation and enlarge teacher-student scope of contact (mean = 16.69).

more
With the growth in sociality and interaction around touching national and international topics, news sites are increasingly becoming places for communities to discuss and address issues spurred by news articles. Proponents of cyberspace promise that online discourse will increase political participation and pave the road for a democratic utopia (Papacharissi, 2004). Comment writers, according to Nagar (2011), essentially represent a well informed community that is highly involved in the political process (p.23). On March 9, 2015 Republican Senators (GOP) wrote a letter to the leaders of Iran telling them that they would not honor the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) after Obama leaves office. This study explored the on-line comments put by Americans dealing with the GOP letter to provide space for that sort of public attitude. This attitude was analyzed through two different perspectives; on one side,it focused on the ways in which participants utilized the markers ofAppra...
Strategies for publishing in English journals: A study of the perceptions of Iranian scholars

more
One of the difficulties in scholarly publishing in English scientific journals is the complex process of revision, which often involves reconstruction of the content and the language of the manuscript and becomes particularly difficult when it comes to non-native writers of English. Focusing mainly on the role of English and language editing in revision, the present study investigated this process in terms of the Iranian scholars' perceptions, problems, and strategies. To this end, 15 Iranian scholars from different disciplines were selected and interviewed, and different themes were derived and analysed. According to the premise of Academic Literacies and the idea that we acquire the skills and practices of our professions mainly by participating in them, our results introduced revision as a set of social practices located within a specific academic structure reflecting particular beliefs and values. Our results also showed that the very specific situation in Iran caused the participants to be, at a great extent, overwhelmed by the process, often leading them to adopt strategies that might not be conducive to their academic advancement.
