The growing body of literature on Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) in the past decades has advocated the use of CALL in educational circles in order to get to a normalized state. However, the uptake of CALL is stipulated by various known and unknown factors. This study examined various factors that may have influenced the uptake of CALL resulting in disuse and discouragement. Fifty Iranian inservice teachers filled out a questionnaire on the sources of CALL use discouragement. The results indicated a comparative analysis of these sources. Lack of facilities and perceived usefulness were regarded as the most and the least discouraging factors in the uptake of CALL respectively. Pertinent discussion and some suggestions for consideration were also put forth.

Abstract: This paper investigates the impact of Internet Self-Efficacy on the process writing performance of EFL learners in two online environment—wiki and email. Forty male and female sophomores and juniors who were sitting a course on process writing participated in this study. The participants were randomly assigned to the wiki and email modules. The teacher required the wiki participants to write and post about given topics on the wiki and as for the email module the participants had to send their writing samples through email. In both modules, the participants were given feedback by the teacher in the email module and by the teacher and peers in the wiki. Each session each writing sample was rated by a writing process rating scale (Maftoon & Akef, 2010). Meanwhile, an Internet Self-Efficacy Measure was also administered to both groups. Results indicated that there were positive and significant correlations between the stages of process writing and Internet self-efficacy. Discu...

Technology has been at the center of researchers’ attention over the last decade in ELT due to growing use of mobiles and other electronic devices among EFL learners. On other hand, socioeconomic status is a term on which a good number of studies have been done lately in education and especially in ELT. Thus, the present study sought to find out whether there is any relationship between Iranian EFL teachers’ socioeconomic status and their technology acceptance and also technology use. In this study, 60 Iranian EFL teachers were selected through convenience sampling as participants. They were in an age range of 25 to 45 and from both genders. Socioeconomic status questionnaire (Aggarwal et al. 2005), technology acceptance scale (Park, 2009) and technology use scale are the three instruments used to collect data in this study. After data collection, first, the normality test, K-S test along with Shapiro Wilk test was run to see if the data would be normal. Since they were normal, the ...

This study is conducted to examine the effect of input enhancement as an implicit and consciousness-raising as an explicit method of instruction on improving grammatical and lexical collocation knowledge of Iranian EFL learners. To reach this aim, a sample of sixty participants at pre-intermediate level of English proficiency in Gorgan, Golestan, Iran was selected. They were randomly assigned to one control and two experimental groups. All of them were given a pre-test to assure that they were homogeneous with regard to their knowledge of collocations. All groups received the same text with different methods of teaching during the six treatment sessions. One week after the last treatment session, a posttest was administered to them. The results of the study revealed that input enhancement had no significant effect on increasing the grammatical collocation knowledge of Iranian EFL learners, while it had a significant effect on the improvement of lexical collocation knowledge. AbstractSingaporean educational system has paid due attention to the quality of its English Language Teaching (ELT) field in recent years. This amount of attention to education and ELT in particular has not been fruitless and we have observed the continuous prosperity in Singaporean educational system. This flourishing system owes its victory to the quality of the teachers and teacher training centers, the future job security, early teaching of the second languages, etc. Firstly, this paper investigates the Singaporean educational system through a detailed discussion of its primary and secondary education. Then teachers' preparation, requirements, standards, and qualifications are put to discussion. Later, Singaporean TOEFL scores in the region between years 1991 and 2006 are compared and contrasted. After reviewing the syllabus of Singapore's educational system, possible success factors are suggested and discussed. These factors have certain implications for Iranian officials and authorities in the ministry of education and educational systems.Key words: Singaporean educational system, primary education, secondary education, ministry of education1. IntroductionEducation has always played a key role as competitive strength and a necessity for the economic growth and social viability of Singapore as a nation since self-government in 1959 (Ingersoll, 2008). In a process of continual development and ongoing improvement, education policies and practices have been reviewed and refined through the years. Since the mid 1990s, the world has been constantly changing around us and this fact has challenged the Ministry of Education (MOE) to make fundamental paradigm shifts in the strategic direction of the education system so that it is geared to meet the needs of Singapore in the 21stcentury (Gopinathan, 1999; Sharpe & Gopinathan, 2002).First, globalization is rapidly recasting the economic landscape and redefining the international workplace in which nations have to operate. Second, technological change is proceeding at a rapid pace, resulting in changes in the ways individuals live and workThird, intellectual capital increasingly will become the basis for competitive advantage among companies and nations. Therefore, education in Singapore must equip successive generations to thrive in an intensely competitive global marketplace, to imbue them with moral attitudes, enterprising and innovative mind sets, and to ensure they are technologically savvy, flexible and willing to continually learn and upgrade their skills. To succeed in this endeavor, Singapore will be dependent on a highquality teaching workforce with the values, instincts, life skills and competencies on which we entrust them with the heavy responsibilities of molding the lives of the young people. As in other Asian nations, teachers generally are well respected in Singapore society, and the MOE has been actively calling for the public and parents to give respect, appreciation, and regard to the profession (Goh & Chang, 2002; Lee, 1996, 2006; Shanmugaratnam, 2004; Teo, 1998). The MOE also is cognizant of the important role teachers' play in educating new generations to break new ground and chart new directions for Singapore. Since embarking on the "Thinking School, Learning Nation" vision in 1997 (Goh, 1997), the MOE has regarded teachers as central to this whole change process and as exemplary role models in seeking out new ideas, learning and practices, and continuously innovating and refreshing their own knowledge (Shanmugaratnam, 2004).The MOE' s goal of building up a qualified teaching force is achieved through a process of careful and detailed planning, aggressive teacher recruitment, comprehensive training and effective teacher retention.Quality is as important as numbers; nevertheless, numbers do count. With better recruitment comes the opportunity to make an investment in the future by adding more qualified teachers to every school. …

Willingness to communicate (WTC) has recently received increasing attention across disciplines of second language acquisition and communication. Part of this attention has been directed towards contexts where this willingness might fundamentally increase-that is online setting. This paper is a case study of an Iranian university student who has been subject to investigation under two modes of synchronous chat and face to face conversation. These two environments have been investigated for grammatical accuracy in terms of correct use of noun pluralization, modifier-noun order, dropping of preposition, and subject-verb agreement. Results indicated that the learner was more willing to communicate in synchronous chat environment with fewer errors in the above mentioned areas rather than the face to face setting. Some pedagogical implications have also been suggested.

more
In the present paper, different views of reflective practice in literature are presented. It is argued that reflective practices are not a matter of casual reflection and taking others-directed decisions on courses of actions but are rather a systematic, critical and holistic approach to the appraisal of what teachers do in class. We will go on further to introduce a new concept of authenticity heavily influenced by the concept of critical reflection and will argue that teachers state of idealism is when they can obtain the best understanding of the self and the world around themselves. By getting to the self they set themselves free from the confinements of imitating the herd and consequently can become the transformers of the educational and social circles all with the aim of promoting the personal and social values of the learners who have an undeniable role in the future of any society. Later in the article, transformative learning theory and its four strands of thought as key issues in the process of teacher authentication are proposed.
