Overview

"Jade Tea Bones" is a historical romance mystery drama produced by Huanyu Film & Television and co-produced by Mango TV. Directed by Guo Hao, Zhang Zhiwei, and Ma Shige, with the screenplay penned by Zhou Mo, the writer of "Story of Yanxi Palace." The series stars Hou Minghao and Gulnazar as the leads, with Chen Ruoxuan, Zhao Yiqin, Ma Wenyuan, and others in supporting roles, comprising a total of 36 episodes.

The drama aired in 2025 and holds a Douban rating of 6.8. As a new series launched by producer Yu Zheng of "Story of Yanxi Palace" fame, it combines the production quality of long-form dramas with the pacing of short-form series. With tea culture and mystery investigation as its dual main themes, it stands out among historical dramas of its time.

Plot

After assuming office as the magistrate of Chunning County, the young top scholar Lu Jianglai (played by Hou Minghao) solves several bizarre cases. However, he falls from being a rising star in the officialdom to utter despair after becoming entangled in an old murder case involving a wife. On the brink of death, he is fortunately saved by Rong Shanbao (played by Gulnazar), the daughter of the Tea King.

The two join forces to reorganize the family business and expand the tea trade, uncovering the truth amidst turbulent and unpredictable circumstances. Rong Shanbao is a career-oriented female lead who truly holds the reins of the family and strategizes behind the scenes, while Lu Jianglai, appearing amnesiac, weak, and patiently biding his time, is actually maneuvering step by step.

"Jade Tea Bones" integrates tea culture into power struggles and family conflicts, offering both the thrilling tension of mystery and deduction and a romantic story where love blossoms over tea.

"Jade Tea Bones" opened with a Douban rating of 6.8, with both its score and number of ratings surpassing those of the concurrently aired "Xiaoyao" (6.4). Audience reception was polarized. Some viewers considered it "arguably the uniquely good drama to start 2025," while others felt its costumes, makeup, and set design leaned towards a short-drama style.

Overall, with its novel theme combining tea culture and mystery with political intrigue, the drama secured a place in the 2025 historical drama market.

Cultural Impact

"Jade Tea Bones" integrates traditional Chinese tea culture into its historical drama narrative, showcasing the role of women in family businesses through the story of Rong Shanbao, the Tea King's daughter. The detailed portrayal of tea ceremonies and tea-making processes in the series also contributes to the dissemination of Chinese tea culture.

Penned by Zhou Mo, the writer of "Story of Yanxi Palace," the drama continues the high production standards of Huanyu Film & Television in historical dramas. Combining the production quality of long-form series with the pacing of short-form ones is also an innovative attempt.
