Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area, located in Zhangjiajie City in northwestern Hunan Province, China, is a natural wonder crowned with multiple honors including World Natural Heritage, UNESCO Global Geopark, and one of China's first batch of National 5A Tourist Attractions. Its core scenic areas include Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Suoxiyu Nature Reserve, Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve, and Yangjiajie Nature Reserve. It is renowned worldwide for its unique quartz-sandstone peak forest landform, where thousands of stone peaks of various shapes rise abruptly from the ground, creating a magnificent spectacle hailed as "an enlarged bonsai and a miniaturized fairyland." With high forest coverage and fresh air, the area is a veritable "natural oxygen bar" and served as an inspiration source for the fantastical landscapes in films like Avatar.
History
The geological history of Wulingyuan dates back to the Devonian period 380 million years ago, when the area was a coastal environment that deposited thick layers of quartz sandstone. Through hundreds of millions of years of crustal movement, uplift, weathering, erosion, and water erosion, the peculiar landforms seen today—peak forests, pillars, gorges, and mesa—were ultimately formed. Its human history can be traced back to ancient times when it was under the jurisdiction of "Wuling Commandery," hence the name "Wulingyuan." Historically, the area remained largely inaccessible for a long time. It wasn't until the late 1970s when the renowned painter Wu Guanzhong visited for sketching and published his article "A Beauty Hidden in the Boudoir, Unknown to the World" that Wulingyuan's peerless scenery gradually became known to the outside world. In 1982, Zhangjiajie became China's first national forest park. In 1992, the Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a World Natural Heritage site.
Main Attractions
- Yuanjiajie: The essence of the scenic area, most famous for the "Qiankunzhu" (South Sky Pillar), the prototype of the "Hallelujah Mountain" in Avatar. Attractions like the Soul-enthralling Platform and the First Bridge under Heaven are majestic, resembling a fairyland when shrouded in mist and clouds.
- Tianzi Mountain: Offers vast viewing platforms overlooking the panoramic peak forest. Representative sites include the Imperial Writing Brush Peaks, Fairy Presenting Flowers, and Xihai Stone Forest. It's also one of the best spots for viewing sea of clouds and winter snowscapes.
- Huangshi Village: Often said, "A trip to Zhangjiajie is not complete without visiting Huangshi Village." The flat-topped village, surrounded by sheer cliffs, provides an excellent vantage point for viewing the quartz-sandstone peak forest landform.
- Golden Whip Stream: A meandering stream winding between cliffs and gorges. With towering peaks, lush forests, and clear water on both banks, it's a classic hiking and sightseeing route.
- Ten-mile Gallery: Along the five-kilometer-long canyon, continuous bizarre peaks and rocks form vivid natural sculptural paintings. Visitors can tour by sightseeing train or on foot.
- Yangjiajie: Known for its precipitous terrain. Attractions like Black Dragon Stockade and Tianbo Mansion are strategically located and ruggedly magnificent, full of primitive wilderness charm.
- Bailong Elevator: One of the world's highest, fastest, and highest-capacity outdoor elevators. Built vertically against the mountain, riding the elevator offers a thrilling experience from the valley floor directly to the mountaintop.
