Sul Ross students, faculty and staff came together on Saturday, April 11, to participate in The Big Event, a campus-wide day of service dedicated to giving back to the local Alpine community. This marks the first time SRSU has hosted The Big Event, with plans to grow and continue the initiative annually.
A total of 35 Sul Ross volunteers completed five community service projects benefiting local organizations and public spaces. Participating groups included students from the Black Student Association, Student Athletic Advisory Committee, Geology Club, Sul Ross Volleyball and Campus Activities, alongside faculty and staff volunteers. Service sites included the Alpine Animal Shelter, Alpine Public Library, Alpine Elementary School, Davis Mountains State Park and Indian Lodge, and the assembly of domestic violence survivor kits for the Family Crisis Center of the Big Bend.
The Big Event is an annual tradition at universities across the country, designed to unite campus communities in a single day of meaningful service. At Sul Ross, the event reflects the institution’s commitment to civic engagement, community partnerships and student involvement beyond the classroom.
“Our students very much want to get involved and interact with the community,” said Katy Williams, Director of Civic Engagement & Student Assistance. “Events like this are a great way to get the campus community connected with local resources, people and each other.”
This year’s Big Event was hosted in conjunction with the Sul Ross Campus Activities Student Organization Olympics, creating an atmosphere of collaboration, school spirit and service. By combining service projects with student engagement activities, the university aimed to foster both community impact and campus connection.
We had a fantastic turnout for Saturday’s bird hike on Hancock Hill! 🐦 Led by Dr. Antonio Cantu and Dr. Alejandro Chavez, hikers spotted and learned about desert birds like the Black‑throated Sparrow—an impressively drought‑adapted species that gets most of its water from food. 🌵(Photo credit: Audrey Taulli) The Alpine area is also spring breeding ground for Black‑chinned Hummingbirds, which zipped along the trail with heart rates up to 480 beats per minute! 💨 (Photo credit: Michael Gray)
For our next guided hike, join us on the Saturday before 🌍 Earth Day! Don’t miss this chance to explore, learn, and celebrate the planet that sustains us! 🌄 Visit the @borderlandsresearchinstitute page's link in their bio to sign up today.
