Introduction
Benue State University was established in 1992/93 session. This was to encourage the development of high level manpower to meet the needs of the state, the country and the world at large.
The first Civilian Government of Benue State, His Excellency,
Mr. Aper Aku
, who was inaugurated 1979, conceived the idea of a university for Benue State. Others like the former Military Administrator of Benue State,
Lt. Col. Fidelis Makka
inaugurated a 13 member steering committee in 1991, with Dr. I.D. Agogo as his SSG/HOS. However, it was the second Civilian Governor of Benue State,

that established the university in 1992/1993 academic session.
The university took off with four faculties:
* Faculty of Arts
* Faculty of Education
* Faculty of Science
* Faculty of Social Sciences;
With an initial student enrolment of 308 undergraduate and 582 Remedial students.
Deans, Faculty of Education
The pioneer dean of the faculty of was Dr. C.O. Abah (later Professor C.O. Abah). He was followed by the
following:
i. Dr. C. O. Abah (later Prof. C.O. Abah – 1993 – 1997)
ii. Prof. John Hembaor Ortyande (1997 – 2000)
iii. Prof. Mrs. Nancy Agbe (2000 – 2004)
iv. Prof. Mrs. Beatrice O. Ker (2004 – 2006)
v. Prof. Targema Iorvaa (2006 – 2010)
vi. Dr. Daniel A. Nevkar (2010 – 2014)
vii. Prof. Gbenda Batur-Laha (2014 – 2019)
viii. Prof. David Amokaha Aboho (2019 – date)
Departments in the Faculty of Education
There are a total of six (6) departments with their current Heads of Department as at 2019/2020:
Department of:
i. Arts and Social Sciences Education (Dr. Titus Terver Udu)
ii. Science and Mathematics Education (Prof. Emmanuel Edoja Achor)
iii. Educational Foundations (Prof Gabriel Akume)
iv. Human Kinetics and Health Education (Dr. Charles G. Iortimah)
v. Library and Information Science (Dr. David Aju)
vi. Vocational and Technical Education (Dr. Elijah Hime)
In addition to these departments, there is a directorate and a unit that are relevant to the faculty, they are:
i. Centre for Continuing Education (CCE)
Director: Prof Peter Ogbu Agogo
Deputy Director: Dr. Joseph Fefa
Secretary: Mr. Joseph Asema (DR)
CCE – runs a Part Time degree programme. Its programmes are opened to all Benue State University faculties
as affiliates of the centre.
ii. Sandwich Programme
Coordinator: Prof. Linus Zaria
Deputy Coordinator:
Secretary:
The Sandwich Programme runs degrees on vocation contact basis. These two units run their Journal
Publications.
Faculty of Education Publications
Most of the departments in the faculty run functional and internationally recognised journals. However, the faculty runs its journal with National and International outlook. It is the – BENUE STATE UNIVERSITY JOURNAL OF EDUCATION (BSUJE). It started publication in 2003. This year, we have volume 21.
Today, BSUJE has articles across Nigeria, with very wide subscription.
The Present Editorial Board of BSUJE:
