Urbanism
The Urbanism Concentration explores the impact of architectural design on the historical, social, cultural, political, economic, technological, and physical transformations in cities and their effects on urban habitation.
An image from the “Barcelona, Metropolis of Cities” traveling exhibition (2017), curated by Professor Joan Busquets of the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and designed and installed at the School of Architecture by Associate Professor Sara Bartumeus Ferré.
Program Area Studios
Studios in this Concentration investigate and propose design ideas that respond to changing urban conditions in different locations across the globe. Seminars and lecture courses provide a theoretical and practical foundation for identifying, analyzing, and communicating urban design and research problems. Faculty expertise includes urban history, colonial and contemporary history, urban morphology, collective-public space design, cultural facilities design, housing design, high-rise architecture, informationalism, media, disaster response, and cities in developing regions.
