Mamaqtuq! It is Delicious!: Traditional Foods of the North
April 2, 2026 - April 4, 2027
, Arctic Museum main galleries
Food is at the heart of Inuit culture. In the Arctic this means food hunted, fished, or gathered from the land, air, and sea. Whales, seals, caribou, muskox, fish, and birds, as well as berries and other plants, have provided untold generations with all the healthy nourishment they needed to thrive. These foods continue to be important to Inuit, and many consider hunting, gathering, sharing, and eating these traditional foods to be central to Inuit identity.
At Home in the North
May 30, 2023 - June 1, 2026
, Arctic Museum main galleries
From the sledge that carried Peary to the North Pole in 1909 to a SmartBUOY that tells contemporary Inuit travelers if the sea ice is safe, this exhibit examines life in the Arctic historically and today.

Arctic Museum’s New Show Highlights Food Challenges Faced by Inuit Communities
What do a man disguised as a polar bear, a sculpture of a hamburger patty full of animals’ spirits, and microplastics have in common? You can see them all in the Arctic museum’s newest exhibit.
Arctic Museum Acquires Bryan and Cherry Alexander Photographic Archive
The Peary MacMillan Arctic Museum is delighted to announce the acquisition of the life’s work of renowned polar photographers Bryan and Cherry Alexander. The archive, comprising more than 50,000 images taken over five decades deepens and broadens the Arctic museum’s already large photographic collection.
Kaplan and LeMoine Call Your Attention to the People of Greenland
In the international conversation among world leaders and others around who should own Greenland, one faction seems to have been overlooked, according to Susan Kaplan and Genevieve LeMoine, and that is the people of that country.
Land Acknowledgement
Bowdoin College is located on the ancestral homelands of the Wabanaki. Today the Wabanaki include the Abenaki, Maliseet, Mi’kmaq, Passamaquoddy, and Penobscot nations, who have deep and enduring relationships with Maine’s lands and waterways. We acknowledge the painful legacy of the region’s colonial history and commit to better understanding it, while also celebrating the vibrancy of Native American cultures and working to build a more inclusive community.
