Sustainable Campus
Working towards a Sustainable Environment
The Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) sprawling over 100 acres campus has water harvesting ponds (3 crore litre capacity), waste management units (Vermitechnology & food waste composting), employs renewable energy (solar panels) and about 40% of the campus habitat is dedicated to biodiversity development.
The Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) works to promote environmental education through action-oriented awareness and advocacy. We practice self sustaining eco- friendly activities and promote environmental consciousness among the younger generation. Our Environmental Policy reflects the commitment of the University towards the environment. The University is committed on reducing the impact of healthcare activities on the environment and conservation of biodiversity. The eco- friendly stance is seen in the University’s commitment as a no smoking, plastic free, clean and green campus. Efforts are being made to develop the campus on green concepts particularly focus on water conservation, use of alternative sources of energy, solid waste management, vermicomposting, green belt development and sustainable architectural designs of buildings. The campus is designed with several features for reducing energy consumption and utilizing renewable natural resources such as solar panels and rain water harvesting pond. A large pond inside the campus revives the underground water table and provides water during the lean period. Waste water in the campus is recycled in the sewage treatment plants and the treated water meets the prescribed standards for landscape irrigation. The University considers scientific management of waste disposal to limit the impact on the environment and society. As a sustainable initiative we have a vermicomposting unit to recycle organic waste from kitchen and garden using earthworms. Extensive landscape developed over the years encourages biodiversity. A medicinal plant garden comprising of about 50 plant species is maintained in the campus.

The campus has grassland, individual and clumped trees, shrubs and grasses accounting for more than 358 plant species. Various organic practices manage our garden and support the local flora and fauna species. Horticulture green waste is used to produce compost and mulching materials. No pesticides or chemical fertilizers are used on the campus. Local drought tolerant plant species that host insects especially bees and butterflies are planted. Flora and fauna auditing of the campus is done annually by subject experts
