Ewha Holds Dedication Ceremony for New Main Gate
Ewha Womans University held a dedication ceremony for its main gate on March 31 to mark its 140th anniversary, unveiling a newly built entrance that reflects the university’s storied history and status. The new main gate, which was completed after one month of construction beginning in February, is designed both to symbolize Ewha’s identity as it marks its 140th anniversary and to enhance student safety. Consisting of stone pillars and white gates, the gate’s lattice design incorporates Gothic motifs from the façade of the Welch-Ryang Auditorium, ensuring architectural cohesion across campus. The color of the pear blossom relief on the wall keeps the gate in harmony with the surrounding landscape. In addition, a folding gate system was introduced, allowing the white gates to retract into the pillars during normal operation for unobstructed passage and to extend when access is restricted, enhancing operational efficiency and ease of maintenance. Ewha’s main granite gate, which was built in 1958 as part of the post-Korean War campus reconstruction, is a historical site that has served both as a focal point of the democratization movement and a symbolic space for student interaction. It was relocated in 2002 following the demolition of Ewha Bridge and later reinstalled set back within an open forecourt, where it remains in use. The dedication ceremony at the main gate was attended by around 20 participants, including Eun Mee Kim, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Ewha Womans University; Ewha President Hyang-Sook Lee; and key university administrators, as well as representatives of the faculty and staff, students, and alumnae. President Hyang-Sook Lee remarked, “The newly renovated main gate embodies Ewha’s identity, rooted in 140 years of history and tradition, and also symbolizes a new beginning as we move toward the future. I hope the gate will serve as a meaningful place that rekindles cherished memories and pride among members of the Ewha community and shares Ewha’s values and spirit with all who visit.”
