Philippines Chairs 18th ASEAN-IPR Advisory Board Meeting, Advances Regional Peace Initiatives
JAKARTA, INDONESIA – The Philippines reaffirmed its commitment to regional peace and cooperation as it chaired the 18th Meeting of the Advisory Board of the ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (ASEAN-IPR) at the ASEAN Headquarters in Jakarta on 08 April 2026.
The meeting was presided over by Executive Director Andres S. Aguinaldo, Jr., Philippine Representative and current Chair of the ASEAN-IPR Advisory Board. He likewise serves as Executive Director for Plans and Programs of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU), and concurrent Executive Director of the Philippine Peace Institute (PPI).
In his opening remarks, Aguinaldo underscored the continued relevance of dialogue and peaceful dispute resolution amid evolving global challenges. “These recent events remind us of the enduring importance of dialogue, restraint, and the peaceful resolution of disputes and threats,” he said, adding that such developments “underscore the value of institutions such as ASEAN-IPR in advancing understanding, promoting trust, and contributing to a culture of peace in our region and beyond.”
Advisory Board members from across ASEAN Member States participated in the meeting, with nine (9) attending in person and two (2) joining virtually, reflecting sustained regional engagement and cooperation. The meeting was supported by the ASEAN-IPR Secretariat, led by its Executive Director, Ambassador I Gusti Agung Wesaka Puja.
During the meeting, members exchanged views on key priorities and ongoing initiatives, emphasizing the need for ASEAN-IPR to remain responsive to evolving regional dynamics. Discussions focused on the Institute’s 2026 Annual Work Plan, refinement of priority research areas, and progress in regional partnerships, including the ASEAN Think Tank Dialogue.
The Board also highlighted the importance of advancing policy-relevant research, strengthening regional knowledge networks, and expanding outreach—particularly within academic institutions—to deepen peace awareness across ASEAN. Members further discussed ways to strengthen ASEAN-IPR’s institutional role in supporting ASEAN’s peace and reconciliation agenda, consistent with its mandate as a platform for dialogue, research, and capacity-building.
As Chair, Aguinaldo steered the discussions with an emphasis on consensus-building, inclusivity, and forward-looking cooperation, reinforcing the Philippines’ role in advancing a culture of peace in Southeast Asia.
The meeting forms part of the Philippines’ broader engagements under its ASEAN Chairship, aligned with the theme “Navigating Our Future, Together.” It also marked the first ASEAN-IPR Advisory Board session under the Philippines’ 2026 chairship, underscoring the country’s commitment to strengthening regional mechanisms for dialogue and cooperation. ####
