Harvey Borovetz: An ‘odyssey’ in bioengineering
When the first artificial heart implant in Pittsburgh took place more than 40 years ago, Harvey Borovetz was the only engineer in the room. His job was to make sure the technical equipment involved worked — and it did.
The success of this surgery was only the beginning for Borovetz and the development of artificial organ technology at UPMC. Since then, Borovetz’s research has centered on the design and clinical utilization of cardiovascular organ replacements for both adult and pediatric patients. At the same time, he has helped build Pitt’s Department of Bioengineering from the ground up.
“I haven’t had a career,” Borovetz said. “I’ve had an odyssey.”
