Our patio areas, rope course, and organic garden are just a few of the ways we bring lessons to the outdoors. LET'S EXPLORE REAL WORLD APPLICATION LIFE SKILLS Our life skills program is woven into the daily curriculum through social studies and language arts. Through literature, role play, and discussion, students learn tools to help them make smart decisions and adapt to change. UNDERSTANDING LIFE SKILLS PRESERVATION SUSTAINABILITY Sustainability is naturally built in to the Woodlawn Way. Our green campus provides our students opportunities to learn about organic gardening, composting, and preserving our natural surroundings for generations to come. PRESERVING THE WAY RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS CULTURE + TRADITIONS Woodlawn students are thoughtful, caring citizens of our community and beyond. Our culture is one of mutual respect, care and compassion, respect,  independence and responsibility that brings about trust and honor in choices. THE WOODLAWN WAY WHY I LOVE WOODLAWN “The part I enjoy most about Woodlawn is that you get to make your own fun. Interested in a ga-ga pit? Build one yourself on campus! We spent the fall building one and then had a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Now nearly everyone in the school is playing ga-ga ball. It’s pretty cool. You learn pretty quickly that you can make a difference by just speaking up and getting involved. It’s surprising how many people will join in on the fun. Check out our Grounds Crew club. We’re always looking for new members.” – Zach L. ’17 IN THE COMMUNITY MAKING A DIFFERENCE In The Community, students engage in Service Learning partnerships and the annual STEAMfest community event. Woodlawn shares Project Based Learning training with other local schools. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT SERVICE LEARNING In all grade levels, Woodlawn students advocate for a specific local or global cause that is interwoven throughout their year-long course of study. Rather than fulfilling a required number of hours, our students spend the year understanding and gaining the perspective of their service partner. OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS STEM + ART STEAMFEST STEAMfest is the largest annual science and arts festival in the region, providing free hands-on experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. In April 2022, more than 800 guests explored over 60 hands-on activity booths created by local colleges, libraries, museums, schools, clubs, and businesses. LEARN WITH STEAMFEST SHARING KNOWLEDGE FOR THE EDUCATORS Through a grant from the Virginia Wellington Cabot Foundation, Woodlawn shares the skills for Project Based Learning with public school teachers from the region using the Buck Institute’s PBL Works program. Over 3 days, we provide specialized training in Project Based Learning. SHARING PBL WHY I LOVE WOODLAWN “Outside of the classroom, the sky’s the limit for what a student can do here. During my time at Woodlawn, I have had the opportunity to explore several of my interests and blaze my own trail. One great example of this came during the winter of my sophomore year, when a couple friends and I wanted to run indoor track. Due to the rules of our conference, Woodlawn is not allowed to have an indoor track team associated with the school. Despite this unfortunate rule, my friends and I were able to establish a club team which allowed us to compete. Since its establishment, our club has run each winter, and it’s just one example of how the opportunities at Woodlawn are endless. I am extremely grateful for the role that Woodlawn has played in my life, and I would encourage anybody with the opportunity to attend this school to take it.” – Jack H. ’19 Duke University DIVERSITY AROUND THE WORLD Every Woodlawn student has the opportunity to experience a diverse global community.
