A Woodlawn Tradition
Cross Country
DISCOVER THE DIFFERENCE
Beginning in 2003, when Woodlawn middle school runners represented the school in its first-ever interscholastic competition, the Trailblazers quickly established themselves as a force in the Charlotte-area cross country community.
Then, as now, our runners trained on the soft dirt trails that surround our campus, and enjoyed winding through the forest as well as tackling the hills to build their endurance.  In 2008, the Trailblazers fielded boys and girls varsity cross country teams for the first time.  Woodlawn joined the NCISAA in 2014, and since then our boys team has been crowned SPAA conference champion 6 times and earned an impressive three-peat as 1A state champions in 2014, 2015, and 2016.  Our girls claimed both the conference championship and the 1A state championship in 2015.
Both varsity and middle school teams for boys and girls compete in the fall season.

Laura Wookcock
What experience do you have running cross country?
– I ran cross country in middle school and have been an endurance athlete ever since. I ran the 3000 and 1600 for my high school track team in Connecticut. Post college I really gained interest in cross country running after hiking 2,000 mi of the Appalachian trail. I’m always trail running and backpacking in my free time and am currently training to run rim to rim to rim at the Grand Canyon.
What experience do you have coaching?
– This is my first time coaching cross country, but I’m a certified yoga teacher and have taught yoga and fitness classes to adults since 2017.
What makes cross country special to you?
– Cross country running is my true training passion. I love the freedom and accessibility of running, and taking it to the trails is an added bonus. It mixes my favorite elements of the outdoors and exercise.
What would you tell a student to get them interested in cross country?
– I would tell them that trail running can help you relaxes and can give you confidence. Cross country is a sport where you are both part of a team and your own team. It’s great for athletes who want to compete and push themselves to be stronger mentally and physically.
In addition to leading the Cross Country team, Coach Woodcock teaches Middle School Science.

Boys Finish 3rd in State Meet; McGeough and Jacobson three-peat on All-State Team

Our boys have struggled with injuries all season and were seeded #7 in the team standings going into the meet. Defending individual state champion Jackson McGeough led the team and ran his best race of the season, clocking in at 18:41 for 3rd place. Gael Garza claimed the 19th spot, running a 20:57 - just 2 seconds off his lifetime personal best. But senior Ethan Mason came through in his final 5K as a Trailblazer by running a season best 21:16 and finishing 23rd (30 places better than his projected finish). That effort enabled the boys to finish a surprising 3rd place with 43 points in the team competition. A very satisfying end to the season for our boys team!
Our girls were unable to score in the team competition, but recorded two huge personal bests today. Freshman Adina Jacobson dropped her PR by 30 seconds as she claimed the individual runner-up spot with a time of 21:25. Junior Carmen Lolla shaved over a minute off her PR, finishing in 31st place with a 26:52.
Congrats to Jackson and Adina - they both made the all-state team for the third consecutive year!

Boys Claim SPAA Conference Title
Oct. 14, 2019 - Despite entering the conference race as underdogs, our varsity boys rose to the occasion to take the SPAA Conference title for the FIFTH TIME IN SIX YEARS! They were led by junior Jackson McGeough, who was all alone in first place with a time of 19:22. Jackson’s individual victory marked the sixth year in a row that a Trailblazer has captured that honor. Sophomore Gael Garza passed an opposing runner just after the 2-mile mark and cruised home in 3rd place. Senior Ethan Mason wrapped up the Woodlawn scoring with a strong 5th place finish, giving the Trailblazers 9 points versus 12 points for United Faith.
Our girls were unable to score as a team, but took two of the top three individual places in the race. Freshman Adina Jacobson finished in 2nd place with a time of 22:36, and junior Carmen Lolla broke the 28-minute barrier with a 3rd place finish - a huge personal record that was over a minute faster than her previous best!
