Worksite Wellness:
We are available to help employers plan and start worksite wellness programs. Whether you’re thinking about starting a program or wish to strengthen your current program, we can help.
Turning Point of Central VT worked with our Chronic Disease Designee on improving their nutrition and fitness at the workplace through a 3-month interactive education plan. They also received a VDH Worksite Wellness grant to fund the purchase of a smoothie blender, yoga mats, exercise bands, and dumbbells for their office space and more.
Capstone Community Action of Barre also received a VDH Worksite Wellness grant to receive mindfulness materials, outdoor chairs, foot and neck massagers and more.
My Healthy Vermont
: My Healthy Vermont offers free workshops to help you prevent or manage chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and chronic pain.
3-4-50 Model
: 3-4-50 helps us understand the overwhelming impact of chronic disease in Vermont and inspires us to take action to change it. Businesses, schools, cities and towns, and health care providers all play an important role in shaping the health of Vermonters. Our common goal is to make the healthy choice the easy choice where we live, work, learn and play.

We participated in the process of creating the

Community Prevention Partners
Central Vermont New Directions Coalition
was established in 1998 to serve the needs of youth and families in Washington County towns. The coalition is a non-profit organization dedicated to making a difference in youth substance use in our community. With the help of community members and organizations we are able to successfully educate and inform all demographics within our community.
Turning Point Center of Central Vermont
helps people find, maintain, and enhance their substance abuse recovery by providing peer-based recovery supports to individuals and families; conducting educational programs that aid in building and enriching a healthy life; and maintaining a safe haven for sober recreation and social activities.
Central Vermont Medical Center
is the primary health care provider for 66,000 people who live and work in the 26 communities of central Vermont. It provides 24-hour emergency care, with a full spectrum of inpatient (licensed for 122 beds) and outpatient services. CVMC’s professional staff includes over 200 physicians and 70 advanced practice providers representing 25 medical specialties.
Central Vermont Substance Abuse Services
provides outpatient clinic support to people with a wide range of substance abuse and their families. We support adults and adolescents in the greater Washington County region.
Treatment Associates
specializes in Medicated-Assisted Therapy (MAT) using prescription Suboxone (buprenorphine) for the treatment of opioid dependence including addiction to heroin and prescription pain narcotics. The MAT program consists of medication management, group and individual therapy and accountability requirements (urine screens, pill/film counts).
The Washington County Youth Services Bureau
provides a wide range of innovative and effective programs that empower and enrich the lives of youth and families in Washington County, and provides leadership and support to other youth programs throughout Vermont.
Central Vermont New Directions Coalition
coordinates prevention partnerships in your community. These partnerships aim to reduce underage drinking, binge drinking, prescription drug misuse and cannabis use by promoting municipal policy changes, providing opportunities for education and providing referrals to local resources.

Emergency Preparedness
We work with local, state, and federal partners to prepare for public health emergencies in Central Vermont. We support emergency planning with the University of Vermont Central Vermont Medical Center (UVM CVMC) and serve on its Emergency Preparedness Committee. Barre Local Health staff maintain agreements for rapid mass-clinic setup, help train and equip staff, provide preparedness presentations, and run local exercises to practice public notification and medication and vaccine distribution.
Medicine Distribution Sites and Volunteers Wanted
During some public health emergencies, the Barre Local Health Office will set up a site where medications can be distributed. The site, called a “point of distribution” or POD site, helps the Health Department get medicine to people who need it as quickly as possible.

Medical Reserve Corps
The Central Vermont Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is a volunteer program for community members with and without medical training. Volunteers support community events by staffing first aid stations, providing basic care, and helping people prepare for emergencies.
MRC volunteers strengthen our community’s health and resiliency in the face of an emergency.

Central Vermont Vaccine Access Coalition
Barre Local Health Office is renewing its commitment to local support for area immunization providers during the 2025-2026 Respiratory Virus Season through the Central Vermont Access Coalition.
Mission:
Increase Flu and COVID Vaccine Access in Central Vermont for the 2025-2026 Respiratory Virus Season.
Meeting Objectives:
Raise awareness about local community resources and vaccination opportunities during the respiratory virus season.
Identify gaps in vaccine access within our community.
Collaborate with local vaccine partners.
Provide feedback to the Vermont Department of Health (VDH) Immunization Program regarding emerging needs and trends related to local vaccine access barriers.

Infectious Disease
The Barre team responds to reports of infectious diseases, including both individual cases and outbreaks. We also help local partners get ready for and respond to infectious diseases in their settings.
We work with schools, childcare programs, shelters, hospitals, summer camps, long-term care facilities, employee health teams, provider offices, and others on infectious disease questions and concerns.
We support both community organizations and community members, and we often work together across our office to do that. There’s no wrong door - if you reach out, we’ll help connect you with the right person.

Central Vermont School Health Highlights
We are proud of the 28 schools in our wider community for the many programs they have started to improve the health of their students, including:
Tasty Testers, where students get to test and vote on the food that becomes part of their school menus.
Jr. Iron Chefs
, a statewide culinary competition that challenges teams of middle and high school students to create healthy, local dishes that inspire school meal programs.
Safe Routes to School
, a program that helps kids get to and from school safely. More than half of the schools in our district have Safe Routes to School!
Running teams like
Girls on the Run,
which help girls in our community build confidence and form healthy habits that will stay with them throughout their lives.
Empowerment groups for students like Students on the Move,

Students Against Destructive Decisions

Mindfulness activities to teach students emotional regulation, compassion for others, and stress reduction techniques.
School gardens help students learn how to grow, prepare, choose, and eat healthy foods. These skills support better food choices throughout life. School social workers, counselors, and occupational therapists also use gardens to help children build social and developmental skills. An informal 2014 study found that every school in Washington County has a school garden.

Breastfeeding resources and education are offered to all pregnant people as they prepare for the arrival of their new baby.
The Barre Local Health Office is breastfeeding-friendly! Anyone can use our private infant feeding room.

Breastfeeding Coalition of Central Vermont
The Breastfeeding Coalition of Central Vermont is a partnership between our local health office and community partners such as Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Central Vermont Medical Center, Good Beginnings, and WIC. This coalition provides information to the community through:
breastfeeding awareness
prenatal breastfeeding classes
educational resources for partners and families to support breastfeeding
information to employers so women can return to work and continue to breastfeed.
Breastfeeding Friendly Employers
Our local health office also supports breastfeeding in the community. We collaborate with workplaces to make them more accessible to breastfeeding moms. Through things like a Breastfeeding Friendly Employers grant, local employers are able to create private lactation spaces within their workplaces.

At a farmer’s market you can buy just-picked fruits and vegetables and find something new to try. The market can also be a great learning experience for your kids! The Vermont Farm to Family Program offers coupons for free, locally grown vegetables and fruits to eligible WIC participants. See a list of

Coupons are available for use at participating markets throughout our region on a first come, first served basis.
Coupons can be picked up at our office after completing a
WIChealth.org
lesson or attending a scheduled distribution at the office or a local market.
Coupons can be used July through October, giving families the chance to select their favorite fruits and vegetables!

Our office does not provide water testing kits.

Plan to drop off or ship your water samples the same day you collect them.
Some samples may need to remain cold for testing.
Drop-off times are Monday - Thursday, 7:45 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Samples are not accepted on Fridays, state holidays, or the day before state holidays.

Breastfeeding Coalition of Central Vermont
The Breastfeeding Coalition of Central Vermont is a partnership between our local health office and community partners such as Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Central Vermont Medical Center, Good Beginnings, and WIC. This coalition provides information to the community through:
breastfeeding awareness
prenatal breastfeeding classes
educational resources for partners and families to support breastfeeding
information to employers so women can return to work and continue to breastfeed.
Breastfeeding Friendly Employers
Our local health office also supports breastfeeding in the community. We collaborate with workplaces to make them more accessible to breastfeeding moms. Through things like a Breastfeeding Friendly Employers grant, local employers are able to create private lactation spaces within their workplaces.

Farm to Family
At a farmer’s market you can buy just-picked fruits and vegetables and find something new to try. The market can also be a great learning experience for your kids! The Vermont Farm to Family Program offers coupons for free, locally grown vegetables and fruits to eligible WIC participants. See a list of
participating farmers markets

Coupons are available for use at participating markets throughout our region on a first come, first served basis.
Coupons can be picked up at our office after completing a
WIChealth.org
lesson or attending a scheduled distribution at the office or a local market.
Coupons can be used July through October, giving families the chance to select their favorite fruits and vegetables!

Water Testing Drop Off
Barre Local Health Office is a part of the
Drinking Water Drop-Off Program
.
Our office does not provide water testing kits.

Plan to drop off or ship your water samples the same day you collect them.
Some samples may need to remain cold for testing.
Drop-off times are Monday - Thursday, 7:45 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Samples are not accepted on Fridays, state holidays, or the day before state holidays.
