The role of taxation as a cornerstone for sustainable economic development took center stage at Godfrey Okoye University during a recent public lecture. Addressing a captive audience of staff and students at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Convocation Arena, the Executive Chairman of the Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (ESIRS), Mr. Emmanuel Ekene Nnamani emphasized that stronger tax compliance is essential for the government to provide basic amenities and infrastructure.
Speaking on the theme, “Relevance of Tax Instruments in a Developing Economy: Using Enugu State as a Case Study,” Mr. Nnamani candidly identified the hurdles facing tax mobilization in Nigeria and across Africa. He pointed to poor government policies, political interference, and a lingering trust deficit between the government and the public as the primary reasons revenue targets often fall short of public needs.
However, the Chairman offered a hopeful perspective on recent reforms, including the transition to the Nigeria Revenue Service and the introduction of the Nigerian Tax Act. He described the new legal framework as “pro-citizen,” noting that it was specifically designed to protect low-income earners through various exemptions.
To take advantage of these benefits, Mr. Nnamani urged individuals and businesses to formalize their operations by obtaining a Tax Identification Number (TIN), filing returns promptly, and maintaining transparent financial records. He further highlighted that the new law incentivizes growth in critical sectors like agriculture, transportation, and healthcare through strategic tax holidays aimed at attracting investors.
The Vice Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke lauded the session as a vital opportunity for students to expand their knowledge beyond the classroom. He commended Mr. Nnamani for his enlightening presentation, later presenting him with a scroll of recognition for his contribution to the university’s academic discourse.
Closing the event, the Dean of the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences, Prof. Odoh thanked the guest lecturer and reaffirmed the faculty’s commitment to partnering with the state government. He emphasized the importance of aggressive awareness campaigns to ensure citizens understand the long-term benefits of being tax-compliant.
