This week HAO proudly took part in National Science Week, embracing this year’s inspiring theme: “Curiosity – What’s Your Question?”
We believe every great idea begins with a question.

So we ask our whole community: What’s your question?

Well done to our Year 8 and Year 9 football teams, who both won their tense and entertaining matches, by 1 goal. Both our goalkeepers saving last minute penalties to hold out for the win! Great effort by all!

Rewarding Achievement and Behaviour
We have a firm emphasis on
good behaviour
so that the environment at the Academy, inside and outside the classroom, is
calm, purposeful and orderly
.
Achievement is always celebrated with regular encouragement,
praise and awards
for students when they work their hardest and behave well. Our high expectations, combined with a
firm but fair system of sanctions
, mean that all students can reach high standards as well as enjoy their education.
Positive Pathways
To recognise and reward excellent behaviour we have created the
'Positive Pathway'
- a simple
points-based behaviour system
that allows teachers, or any adult in the Academy, to award positive points to students. Students can be awarded points for
good work in their lessons
, showing
excellent manners
and taking part in
extracurricular sport.
Each lesson the teacher nominates a
'Star of the Lesson'
and each week they nominate a
'Star of the Week'
. This is for the student who has made the most progress either within a lesson or across the week. These students receive further bonus points.
As students accrue more points they will pass through boundaries and receive
postcards home
from their form tutors, letters from their Faculty Director and then entered into
prize draws
for JD Sports vouchers. A summary of the Positive Pathway is outlined in the table below:

Celebrating Achievements
The Academy rewards and recognises hard work and commitment through positive points. These are given out by teachers and faculty directors in recognition of extra special effort.
Principal's Breakfast
-
The Principal hosts a termly breakfast session for students with 100% attendance across all years of the academy. Students are nominated by their teachers and formally invited to the event, where their efforts are recognised over refreshments with the Principal and invited staff members.
Celebration of Achievement Evening -
The end-of-year culminates in our annual Celebration of Achievement Evening. Students are nominated across their subjects and receive a formal invitation to attend the evening with their families to receive their prize.
Sanctions
Sanctions are used to respond to poor behaviour. They are applied consistently, giving students opportunities to lessen the sanction at each stage. For further details, see our
Behaviour Policy
on the
Student Welfare page
.
