British translator Nathan Jeffers wrote a review of Belarusian poetry and began translating poems into English – Francis Skaryna Belarusian Library and Museum
Nathan Jeffers, a British translator, has a tragicomic story: he began translating from Belarusian after being involved in a bicycle accident. Shortly before that, he had encountered the language in our library.
The result was a selection of poems by Belarusian women poets (translated from Belarusian and Russian), published in the online journal of political poetry and discussion
Matter
. The selection includes works by Valyantsina Aksak, Vera Burlak, Maria Vaitsiashonak, Volha Hronskaya, Iryna Dubianetskaya, Volha Zlotnikava, Nadzeya Kakhnovich, Hanna Komar, and Nastya Shakunova.
Nathan Jeffers
Jeffers also wrote a review of a collection of poems by Maksim Bahdanovich, Ales Harun, and Zmitrok Byadulya in English translation by Vera Rich, published in London in 1982.
We are very glad that visits to the library inspire people to create new translations and reflect on our literature.
