I shadowed a family medicine physician over spring break. That really clicked it for me because a lot of her job was talking to the patient, getting their medical history, getting to know them as a person. All of her patients had a personal connection with her, and they could talk about things outside of medicine, such as grandkids, siblings, what's going on in the family. And I really love that connection that she was able to have in her community with her patients. That really solidified for me that no matter where I end up, I really want a job where I can have connections similar to those.

Supporting mental health awareness
When I think about mental health, I really just think about the combination of making sure that all of you is doing well. I feel like a lot of the times we only focus on physical health as the main thing to keep track of. But really, none of that is kept together unless your mental health is in check. I personally like to do a lot of de-stressing activities to make sure that my mental health never gets to a place where I'm then starting to worry about my physical health. So, I just see it as the overarching umbrella for health and things that you should take care of.
Learning key lessons
I believe that each semester my classes teach me how to be a better learner. I've come across some difficult classes here at Miami, but one overall lesson that I've learned is that there is no class too difficult that can stop me from being the best student I can be.
Advice for his first-year self
I would definitely tell myself: get some experience. It is so hard to know what you want to do if you've never seen it before. Going into a major without seeing what the day-to-day is like is really hard. So, I would say take that time to reach out to someone in the College of Engineering to see if maybe you could shadow someone.
