Demography
The main objective of the demography unit is to estimate the Seychelles human population and their characteristics such as births, deaths, marriages, divorces and migration. The sources of data that feed into the estimation are data collected from Civil Status records and the Immigration Department. Another fundamental objective of the unit is to produce future estimates and projections for the country. This is done after each Population and Housing Census.
Government policy makers and planners around the world use population projections to gauge future demand for food, water, energy and services and to forecast future demographic characteristics.
About the Bureau
In July 2010, the legal framework of the Bureau was recast and modernized and the National Statistics Bureau Act, 2005, was repealed to be replaced by the National Bureau of Statistics Act, 2010. The institution is now the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and is headed by a Chief Executive Officer.
