A familiar face will return to the Pace Academy basketball court next season: alumna
Morgan Batey ’12
will lead the varsity girls team in their 2026-2027 campaign and beyond. Batey, who served as an assistant coach during the Knights’ 2026 season, takes the reins from coach
Christal Caldwell
, who has led the team since 2021.
Batey graduated from Vanderbilt University in 2016 and went on to earn a master’s in public health from Vanderbilt’s School of Medicine. As a Division I athlete and captain of the women’s basketball team, Batey played 125 games for the Commodores and made 64 starts over the course of her college career. She finished with more than 600 rebounds and nearly 1,000 points and was consistently named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
She later played basketball professionally in Europe—beginning her career with CSM Satu Mare in Romania and, over the subsequent eight years, playing for teams in Portugal, Finland, Israel and France. In addition to her work on the court, Batey has served for five years as an NCAA academic advisor and rules and recruitment specialist for Arise Athletes Foundation. Her coaching experience also includes seasonal stints with the Atlanta Hawks’ Jr. Hawks Summer Camp.
“As a Pace alumna, I couldn’t be more excited to come home and lead this program,” Batey says. “My time at Pace shaped who I am, both on and off the court, and I saw firsthand what it looks like when a school community pours into its students. My goal is to create that same environment for these young women, one built on excellence and with an investment in their growth. I am hopeful they will look back one day and feel the same pride I feel right now.”
In addition to her coaching duties, Batey will serve as sports information manager within the Pace Office of Athletics.
“Coach Batey has been a beloved member of the Pace community since her time as a student,” says Head of School
Fred Assaf.
“She brings experience as a standout high school, college and professional athlete, but more than that, she understands what it means to be a true Pace Knight. As a student, Coach Batey received our senior athlete award and the Head of School’s Award; she was a peer leader and co-president of her senior class. She knows firsthand the dedication it takes to balance a Pace education with elite athletics. I’m thrilled to welcome home a leader who embodies the very best of our school’s spirit.”
