Celebrating Diverse Traditions
Last Monday night, our College Captains, Georgia and Matthew, were honoured to attend an Iftar dinner – an evening meal that breaks the daily fast during Ramadan. Held at Ghan Kebab House in Kilburn, the event brought together student leaders from 22 schools across public, independent, and Catholic sectors to foster intercultural understanding and shared leadership. The evening was co-hosted by the Department for Education, the Association of Independent Schools of SA, Catholic Education SA, the University of Adelaide, and Pinnacle College.
At its heart, Ramadan is a time of reflection, self-discipline, and generosity – values that closely align with Lent in the Catholic tradition. Just as Catholics dedicate this season to prayer, fasting, and acts of service, Ramadan encourages Muslims to strengthen their faith, practice self-restraint, and give to those in need. In our Nazareth community, we recognise and embrace these connections, celebrating the diverse traditions that unite us in faith and humanity.
Matthew was reflecting on his experience and said, “Along with the amazing food, I thoroughly enjoyed speaking with the other students, educators, and guests. The inclusiveness and representation of all the diverse cultures and stories at this event really put into perspective how different we all are. Following Harmony week, it was great to see firsthand everyone come together and share such an important event to the Muslim culture, as well as represent this year’s harmony week theme ‘
We all have a role to play
’. It was a privilege to be invited to share the experience, the Iftar tradition and learn more about the Muslim culture.”
Georgia had some similar centiments to share, “I had never attended an Iftar Dinner before however, I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to experience and be involved in this meaningful tradition. I was able to connect with others to gain a deeper understanding of diverse cultures and their traditions and appreciate values of the community, have a moment for reflection and express gratitude to everyone!”
The evening featured insightful addresses from Hon. Zoe Bettison MP, Minister for Multicultural Affairs & Tourism, and Prof. Mehmet Ozalp from ISRA Academy and Charles Sturt University.
Sharing a meal with students of different faiths and backgrounds served as a powerful reminder that leadership is built on understanding, respect, and community. It was a night of connection, reflection, and a celebration of the values that bring us together.
