Funding Your Studies at CEU
Studying at CEU comes with both educational and living costs. We would like to assist and prepare you by providing an overview of all the information you need to plan your finances before and during your studies at CEU.

Financial Aid by Degree
Financial aid is granted on the basis of academic merit and is available for most of our programs (only full-time programs). Please make sure to check your future
program
's website before you start your application.
Candidates from any country can apply for CEU financial aid. Applicants who want to be considered for these awards must apply by
the appropriate deadline.
To be considered, indicate your interest for financial aid in the
CEU Application Form
(
'Funding'
section).
We offer different types of financial support for each degree level. Please see the details below:
Financial Aid for Bachelor's programs
A small number of
Partial Tuition Awards
is available for outstanding applicants to the following programs:
BA/BSc in Data Science and Society
BA in Culture, Politics and Society
BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics
This is a merit-based award, which may
cover up to 50% of the tuition fee (up to €4,000 per academic year)
.
Financial Aid for Master's programs
Financial Aid for Master’s student is awarded only by academic merit. It can include:
Master’s Tuition Award
(may cover 50% - up to 80% of the tuition fee)
Full Tuition Award is possible only in exceptional cases.
Master’s Stipend Award
(300 EUR/month up to 750 EUR/month)
Financial Aid for Doctoral programs
CEU has an international reputation for high-quality postgraduate education delivered in a research-led environment. In pursuit of our

, we strive to attract the very best graduates worldwide for our doctoral program.
CEU Doctoral Scholarship
Candidates who apply by the
financial aid deadline
are automatically considered for the CEU Doctoral Scholarship, covering the full cost of tuition, complete with a monthly stipend to assist with housing and living costs.
The
Doctoral Stipend is 2,002 EUR/gross/month
, and it is awarded for a period of 48 months in total.
Please note:
PhD stipends are taxable in Austria. PhD students are considered self-employed individuals in Austria, and therefore must declare their income, pay taxes, register with the SVS health insurance provider, and pay social security contributions to SVS.
For students arriving after the program start date, stipends are paid out on a pro-rated basis starting from the arrival date on campus. No retroactive stipend payments are possible.

Where and when can I receive my first stipend?
You must complete the Onboarding and Online Matriculation Form so that you become officially enrolled at CEU and you need to physically arrive at the Vienna Campus. Once you have done that and registered your bank account information in SITS, your stipend will be generated and transferred to your bank account.
If you are a continuing student, you will receive your first stipend once your program officially starts in the actual academic year.
For students arriving after the program start date no retroactive stipend payments are possible.
How to register my IBAN in SITS?
Step: login to SITS with your CEU credentials;
Step: go to tab "My student page - administrative";
Step: select "My bank details"
What if I cannot make it to Vienna in person on time (due to visa reasons only)?
You will still have to complete the online matriculation form and submit your bank account information in SITS, and you need to attend online classes regularly.
For students arriving after the program start date no retroactive stipend payments are possible.
However, the stipends will only be provided once you have physically arrived in Vienna (confirmed by your
department
).
When is the stipend paid?
According to the Financial Aid Policy, the monthly stipend is transferred to the student’s bank account
by the 4th day of each month
.
Do I need to open an Austrian bank account to receive my stipends?
Your bank account needs to be from a
SEPA country
or a SEPA-eligible online bank account (Wise, Revolut, N26) and, it has to be a EUR currency account.
Which is the best bank in Austria/Hungary? Does CEU recommend any banks?
CEU does not endorse or recommend the services of any banks either in Austria or Hungary.
How do I know what fees I need to pay and when throughout the academic year?
Please check your Acceptance Offer Form that you signed from the Admissions Office or your Student Portal in SITS since it has all the information about fees and deadlines. However, the information is on the CEU website as well at

.
If I withdraw from the program in the middle of the academic year, do I have to pay back the scholarship I have received so far?
No. In this case, you need to inform your
department
about your decision, and they will take the necessary steps.

What if I don't arrive by the beginning of the academic year? Will I receive my stipend retroactively?
For students arriving after the program start date (please see
Step 5
, pick your degree first, on late arrivals), stipends are paid out on a pro-rated basis starting from the arrival date on campus. No retroactive stipend payments are possible.
