Welcome to our Academy
I am delighted to welcome you to Harris Academy Purley
Our motto - ‘to learn, to think, to act’ - enshrines a core tenet of our philosophy and that is that education in the classroom is only the beginning of a young person’s development and of education in general. Learning can only come to fruition once it is assimilated and an individual is able to think for themselves. In turn, thought must lead to action and practical application.

A select group of History students took part in a VR workshop from Testimony 360, looking at the Holocaust and hearing the testimonies of survivors. Through the VR headsets, students were able to look around locations used during the Holocaust, and gain a greater understanding of the atrocities that took place. 🥽 Was this a glimpse into the future of teaching?

Last week, our Year 9 scholars did greatly delight in a modern rendering of Shakespeare’s famed Romeo and Juliet at the Globe Theatre, that very house where once his plays were first brought to life. There was dancing most lively, swift-riding upon BMXs, and even the snatching of a phone. Verily, we were in London indeed.

Year 12 & 13 Religious Studies students took their thinking to the next level at the Candle Conference with renowned philosopher Peter Vardy.

From revisiting key topics to sharpening their argument skills, the day was all about exam readiness, critical thinking, and confidence.

Future thinkers in the making—ready to question, challenge, and succeed. 🕯

Today, Year 8 and Year 9 students enjoyed a practical lecture from Dr Sheriff from Queen Mary University of London. The lecture talked about chemical compositions and demonstrated the affects of extremely cold substances when exposed to 'the air we breathe'.

We loved welcoming back some familiar faces to the Academy as alumni students shared their career journeys and the different pathways they took with our Sixth Form students. A valuable and inspiring opportunity to hear first-hand about life after school! Thanks to all of you!

It's Science Week! We have a lot going on in lessons and at lunch. This Friday is our Science Fair, where we will be putting on all sorts of experiments for our students to experience. We also had the first of our chicks hatch today, so look forward to some fluffy pics soon!

World Book Day is over for another year, but that doesn't mean you can't continue to enjoy reading throughout the year! Take your book tokens to your nearest bookshop to grab a great read 📚 Thank you to everyone who bought a cake at the bake sale — the money raised will help support literacy across the Academy.

Huge congratulations to four of our students who have been awarded a Jack Petchey Award! As a group, they represent the very best of our school community: hard-working, kind, and ambitious, while consistently looking out for others. They’re students who lead by example, throw themselves into school life and enrichment, and are known for being reliable, calm, and supportive peers. Read more in our February newsletter. We’re incredibly proud of you all 👏

This week our students enjoyed a tour of Southwark Cathedral, one of London’s oldest places of worship. Located on the south bank of the River Thames, the cathedral has a rich history dating back over 1,000 years. The visit gave students the chance to explore its stunning architecture, learn about its historical significance, and reflect in a truly inspiring setting. 📷 Ms McLean

🐑 🦘What do you get when you cross sheep with kangaroos? Woolly jumpers! ...but not like the ones we saw today. Apologies for not getting everybody into the photo - there were a lot of you!

I am originally from the Caribbean, where education and discipline were always highly valued. When moving to the UK, I looked for a school with strong expectations, clear structure, and a genuine commitment to students achieving their best, and HAPU immediately stood out.
