Harris Academy South Norwood Receives £20,000 Music Funding from Restore the Music
Harris Academy South Norwood is proud to announce that it has received £20,000 worth of funding from Restore the Music (RTM), a leading charity dedicated to transforming music education in schools across the UK. This generous contribution has enabled the school to acquire a wide range of high-quality musical instruments and equipment, significantly enhancing the music provision for its students. Bucking the National Trend Music education in UK state schools has faced a 42% decline in GCSE Music uptake since 2010, with many schools struggling to maintain music departments due to budget constraints. Harris Academy South Norwood is defying this trend. Thanks to RTM’s support, the school now boasts a thriving music department, increased student engagement, and ambitious projects that showcase its commitment to the arts. Last year, Harris Academy South Norwood made history by winning the rights to be the first-ever London school to perform the full edition of Frozen: The Musical—a testament to the school’s dedication to high-quality performing arts opportunities. Transformative Impact on Lessons The funding has provided a full set of brand-new keyboards, djembe drums, samba drums, and xylophones for Key Stage 3 lessons. These resources have revolutionised classroom experiences, allowing every student to participate actively in practical music-making. From whole-class samba ensembles to creative composition projects on keyboards, lessons are now more dynamic, inclusive, and inspiring. Student Voices Sofia, Year 13 drummer, shared her excitement: ‘Having three new drum kits to practice and perform on has completely changed my experience in music. I can now work on my technique and play in ensembles without worrying about equipment limitations. It’s inspiring and makes me want to push myself even further.’ Alea, Year 13 bassist and guitarist, added: ‘We’ve got ten new guitars and basses, plus multiple amps – it’s incredible! Before, we had to share instruments and compromise on sound quality. Now, we can explore different styles and really develop our skills. It feels like a professional setup, and it motivates us to aim high.’ Leadership Perspective Alex Adamiuk, Head of Music and Assistant Principal at Harris Academy South Norwood, expressed his gratitude: ‘We are incredibly thankful to Dr Jonathan Savage and Restore the Music for their amazing support and contribution to music-making at our school. This funding has given our students access to instruments and equipment that were previously beyond our reach. The impact on engagement, creativity, and confidence has been immediate and profound. Music is now a vibrant part of our school culture, and this would not have been possible without RTM’s generosity.’ About Restore the Music Restore the Music is a registered charity committed to improving outcomes for children through music education. By equipping schools with durable instruments and resources, RTM helps break cycles of deprivation and fosters academic and personal growth. To date, RTM has supported over 160 schools, impacting more

Supporting Relief Efforts for Victims of Hurricane Melissa
Dear Parents and Guardians, I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to share important information regarding a humanitarian initiative we are undertaking at HASN in response to the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica and across the Caribbean. Over the half-term break, many of our students, staff, and their families were directly affected by Hurricane Melissa—a Category 5 storm that made landfall in Jamaica with winds reaching 185 mph. The hurricane caused catastrophic damage, particularly in the southwestern regions of the island, flattening communities, destroying infrastructure, and leaving thousands without homes, power, or access to clean water. Relief efforts are ongoing, but the need remains urgent. As a school community rooted in kindness and compassion, we are committed to supporting those affected. We are launching a Food, Clothing & Essentials Drive to collect items that will be sent directly to children and families in Jamaica through our partnership with ODPEM, an official Jamaican disaster relief organisation working on the front lines. We are also collaborating with Harris Crystal Palace and Harris Beckenham to create a federation-wide donation effort. Prefects will visit tutor groups daily to collect items, and we welcome any contributions you can make. We want to send the aid off as soon as possible, so please ensure we have any contributions to the collections by Thursday, November 20th. If you or your child would like to get more involved or have ideas for further fundraising, please contact me directly at adamiuka@harrissouthnorwood.org.uk or speak with Ms Kelly or Mr Adams. Together, we can make a meaningful difference. Thank you for your continued support and generosity. Students at Harris Academy South Norwood Celebrate A Level Success
Students at Harris Academy South Norwood Celebrate A Level Success
~ Students take up places at Russell Group Universities ~
Students, staff and families at Harris Academy South Norwood are celebrating another exceptional year of A Level results, with many students securing places at top universities including King’s College London, Bristol and University College London.
This marks the third consecutive year of significant improvement in A-Level outcomes at the Academy, reflecting the hard work and ambition of its students and the dedication of its teaching staff.
Academic performance was particularly strong in subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, History, Geography, and Religious Studies. Vocational qualifications also saw excellent results, with standout achievements in Sport, IT and Applied Science. Impressively, 48% of students achieved A-B equivalent grades* in their vocational courses.
One student celebrating today is Cindy Zhang, who achieved A*A*A in Biology, Maths and Chemistry. Following an outstanding UCAT score, Cindy received offers from five medical schools and will be studying Medicine at King’s College London. In doing so, she becomes the first in her family to go to university.
Cindy said:
“I can’t see myself doing anything other than Medicine and so I am over the moon to have secured a place at King’s College London. I really want to make a difference to people’s lives and I think Medicine will allow me to do this.
“My family are so excited for me. They know it’s going to be a lot of work but I know they will support me all the way and I can’t wait to make them proud. Going to university is going to be an incredible opportunity and I am really looking forward to exploring London more.”
Also celebrating today is Maggie Bell who, in recent years, has supported and cared for her mum who suffered from severe ill health. Despite this, Maggie has worked very hard and today has achieved A*AA in History, Classics and Politics. She is now set to go to King’s College London to study Ancient History. Along with her exceptional academic performance, she has been a mentor for lower school students, run clubs and has been a tutor and time reader.
Maggie said:
“Whilst the past seven years have been incredibly challenging for me and my family, school has been a welcome distraction. I have really enjoyed my subjects and getting involved in the life of the school. This was the first time my school had offered Classical Civilisation, and I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to study the subject. It has opened up a whole new world to me and has made me think about pursuing a career in heritage and culture.
“Being a young carer has made me a stronger and more resilient person. My parents are immensely proud of me and are so pleased I am going to university. I can’t wait to start my course and explore everything that London has to offer.”
Rob Hitch, Principal of the Harris Academy South Norwood, said:
“This has been a wonderful group of young people: putting in the hours, supporting one another and showing real leadership by mentoring younger students. Their success is richly deserved, and we are incredibly proud of them.”
“It is fantastic to see so many students secure places on competitive university courses. The breadth of courses that our students will be embarking on is remarkable and reflects the wide-ranging, ambitious and challenging education on offer at Harris Academy South Norwood.”

Quick Update
Here’s just a snapshot of what’s been achieved recently:
Achievement: After our brilliant 23-24 year we’ve now built on this success with some amazing IT and sports results already in – comfortably the best results we’ve seen.
Careers & Aspirations: Year 9 had an inspiring talk from a former student, now at Accenture, showing them what’s possible when ambition meets opportunity. Another successful Dallaglio Foundation trip gave students a glimpse into their futures beyond school.
Voicebox: Croydon based organisation voicebox came in today to work with the boys on unpicking the concept of masculinity and how to avoid damaging stereotypes and behaviours
Keeping Students Safe: Year 8 took part in a powerful County Lines awareness assembly—equipping them with the knowledge to stay safe and make positive choices.
Trips & Achievements: Year 11 had an incredible time at Marchants Hill PGL, throwing themselves into activities with enthusiasm. Special mentions to Inaya and Keria for their kindness, Ryan and Tyler for their basketball skills and Amanda for conquering the Giant Swing and zip line.
Sporting Excellence: Shane’s signed to West Brom and Joseph won an international Tae-Kwon-Do tournament
Rewards & Enrichment: Sixth form students enjoyed a well-earned Merky FC trip to the EA Gaming Centre, and our creative arts trips to Dear Evan Hansen and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child were fantastic cultural experiences.
Community & Inclusion: Our Islamic art workshops for Eid will celebrate faith and unity, and we’re looking forward to our Iftar evening tomorrow night. Lower school assemblies on the menstrual cycle have ensured our students feel informed and empowered, and Voicebox sessions have been giving boys the space to reflect on positive masculinity.
Literacy & Creativity: Comic book rewards workshops have been running this week, showing that reading for pleasure is alive and well at HASN.
Y11 Practical Subjects: Year 11 are busy doing their cook-offs in Food tech, look at the amazing pictures below! DT are also now busy making their brilliant products – do talk to them all about their dishes and designs.
Sixth Form role models: The sixth formers are now busy listening to lower school students read and providing targeted mentoring, thanks so much for your support in making this a huge success.
