This expanded educational and Internship opportunities for students will provide employment training and opportunities, personal development, and improved quality of life for the Navajo communities surrounding Diné College. The methods to be employed will be the addition of expanded higher-level academic and internship programs into the structure of STEM disciplines at the College, including development of research laboratories. Under a recent 5 year, $2.5 million, NSF Tribal College and University Program (TCUP) grant, programs to be developed will be a GIS Certificate, Computer Science Certificate, Pre-Engineering A.S., Biology B.S., Secondary Education Math B.S., and Biology/Science Secondary Education Certification B.S. Innovative instruction will consist of a focus on local place-based and inquiry-based knowledge. The place-based content and Internship will consist of Diné cultural knowledge integrated with science discipline knowledge. Local and regional reservation environment and technological issues will be a focus for study, internship research and intervention. Interdisciplinary problem-based and sustainability-focused inquiry study and research will integrate current and proposed STEM disciplines.
