Learn More About Prostate Cancer
What causes prostate cancer?
The exact causes of prostate cancer are not yet known. However, knowing
your risk factors puts you in charge of your prostate health. You and
your specialist can work together to create a screening plan that increases
the chances of prostate cancer being detected early and treated effectively.
Prostate cancer symptoms
Most men will not experience prostate cancer symptoms until the cancer
reaches advanced stages. For this reason, it is important to know your
risk factors and have an accurate idea of your screening needs. Prostate
cancer symptoms and signs may include difficulties with urination, pain
or burning, and erectile dysfunction. Some symptoms may suggest cancer
has spread to other parts of the body.
Prostate cancer screening
and
diagnosis.
Prostate cancer screening enables a physician to detect prostate cancer
in its early stages when it does not cause symptoms. Screening results
can lead to further tests that ultimately are used to formally diagnose
prostate cancer. There are different ways to screen for prostate cancer.
It typically consists of a prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood level
test, digital rectal exam, and a physical examination. A biopsy is used
to diagnose, grade and stage prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer treatment
You may have several options for prostate cancer treatment, including
surgery, radiation and other therapies. In some cases, actively monitoring
prostate cancer may be recommended instead of treatment. Regular screening
results can suggest prostate cancer is growing and needs to be treated.
Additionally, RWJBarnabas Health, together with Rutgers Cancer Institute,
offers cutting-edge prostate cancer
clinical trials
to our patients.
