Learning & Intervention Programs
Supporting All
Students
to Learn
MCC offers additional literacy and numeracy programs to support students in their learning growth.
Year 7 students have one hour a week dedicated to Literacy. During these lessons Literacy Instructional Teachers engage students in explicit instruction in comprehension and writing skills, and develop reading strategies through the Accelerated Reader Program. These lessons take place in the Library. Students are matched to books of interest and ability level and are explicitly taught strategies and skills to assist in their reading comprehension.
Year 7 students also gain Numeracy support through the Quicksmart Numeracy Intervention Program. This program aims at improving student understanding and skills in numerical operations and functions.
The College has also introduced the Macqlit Program targeted at improving student decoding in reading and comprehension.
Expertly trained staff analyse assessment and learning data and observe student learning in the classroom to identify students who would benefit from these programs.
Growth Action
Plans
Our College also supports staff to develop Growth Action Plans (GAP) to further engage and extend students.
Teams of teachers work together, selecting students that would best benefit from extension or intervention.
They collaborate together to build a bank of strategies that could work to extend the student and then implement them in the classroom, using student work samples to assess the success of their pedagogical strategies.
Making Meaning the Marian Way
Our College has a great tradition of implementing Whole School approaches to literacy, numeracy and pedagogy. Following on from our successful Gr8 Comprehension Strategies, Gr8 Teaching and Learning Cycle and GAP Program, this year our College launched our Meaning Map to aid in improving student comprehension skills.
The Map is a graphic organiser that provides students with a scaffold to articulate their thinking and better comprehend the hidden meaning in a text. By identifying a texts’ form, purpose, and perspective of both the writer and the audience, students are better able to make connections, infer and respond to the text. The Meaning Map has been designed after detailed research and analysis of data and is used in all KLA areas for students in Stages 4, 5 and 6.
