What does a Phlebotomist do?
Phlebotomists are technicians trained to draw blood for medical tests, transfusions, donations or research. Working in phlebotomy may require you to provide assistance if patients have adverse reactions to their blood draw or simply to explain your work and help patients feel less nervous. Phlebotomists are also responsible for the assembly and maintenance of a variety of medical instruments including needles, test tubes and blood vials. It is vital that they also keep a safe and sanitary work area, as well as correctly label drawn blood for testing or processing.
Career Outlook
The employment rate for phlebotomists is projected to grow six percent from 2024 to 2034, much faster than average.
1
Phlebotomists in Western New York can expect a median annual wage of $45,600 or $21.92/hour. Starting salaries can be $36,110 or approximately $17.36/hour.
