Academic Advising
Guiding you through your experience at Miami University is a faculty or staff advisor within your chosen field of study. This advisor will be your co-pilot from your first year to Graduation Day, assisting you with course and thematic sequence selections, extra-curricular activities, and any personal or academic challenges that may arise along the way.

Learner-Centered
Miami University adheres to a system of advisement that we call "learner-centered." In this system, the advisor encourages you, the student, to gain ownership of your college experience and treat every choice you make as an opportunity to learn and grow. Your advisor will guide you on the Miami Plan for Liberal Education, divisional and major requirements, declaring your major, career planning, and more. At Miami, we will help you succeed.
Advising at Miami
Your academic advising experience begins at
Summer Orientation
, where students receive registration advising from a faculty or staff academic advisor in their department or division of major.
If you have not decided on a major in your first year, you are assigned to our
Exploratory Studies program
. In Exploratory Studies you will discover your passions and interests while completing core classes. Once you decide on a major, you are assigned an appropriate advisor from the department or program of that major.
Students on the regional campuses receive personal advising from faculty and staff members in
Regionals Academic Advising
.

Advisor Training and Accountability
All academic advisors at Miami undergo training and development to ensure their success as vanguards for your college career. Our advisor development program consists of several required modules focusing on the following subjects:
Miami University's academic advising philosophy
The Miami Plan for Liberal Education
Advising-related policies and procedures
Taking notes on advising sessions
Engaging in advising conversations with students from first to senior year
Optional training modules focus on special topics and populations of students, such as financial aid, mental health issues, and study abroad
The Undergraduate Academic Advising Council oversees the philosophy, practices, advisor training, and assessment for undergraduate academic advising at Miami. It is chaired by the associate provost and includes the advising leader from each academic division as well as representatives from the divisions of student life and enrollment management and student success.
