Professor Ernest Izevbigie, Vice Chancellor of Margaret Lawrence University
, has described the institution as an exceptional ivory tower in view of its academic and structural achievements, made within three (3) years of inception.
Prof. Izevbigie stated this in his address at the
3rd Matriculation ceremony
of Margaret Lawrence University, held on Monday, March 16, 2026, at the Abuja campus of the University.
Speaking shortly after formally admitting
over 260 fresh students
into the University, the Vice Chancellor stated that "exceptionalism" has become the policy direction of the institution in its bid to train and produce Nigeria's future leaders and champions of industry.
Highlights of "Exceptionalism"
1.
The
Paul Odili College of Medicine
is poised to become a model medical school and a major hub for medical education in Nigeria.
2.
MLU is the "fastest growing university in Nigeria according to NUC" and owns its own teaching hospital, de novo.
3.
First university in West Africa to purchase the
Anatomage Table - Series 12
, a 3D touch-screen virtual dissection tool.
4.
State-of-the-art
Engineering Equipment
such as computerized lathe machines, CNC milling, and universal testing machines.
"With these advanced facilities, the University is well positioned to contribute meaningfully to society, particularly in areas such as construction and development of durable and sustainable infrastructure. This University is poised to conduct strength tests for builders and engineers to ameliorate the incidence of building collapse in Nigeria."
Focus on Discipline: Ban on Smartphones
In a move aimed at ensuring discipline and promoting academic excellence, the Vice Chancellor announced a
ban on the use of smartphones on campus
by students. However, basic mobile phones for calls and text messages are permitted to stay in touch with families.
Policy Rationale
"Using a cell phone can be a distraction. For them to focus on their studies, we do not allow smartphones on campus. The policy does not completely isolate students; they have regular phones to make calls and send texts, but Android or iOS devices are restricted," Prof Izevbigie explained.
Note:
First violation attracts a two-week suspension, with subsequent violations attracting stiffer penalties.
Prof Abubakar Rasheed
, the former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), who was the special guest of honour, congratulated the students, advising them to remain disciplined and focused on their studies while being ethically responsible.
