Lower School (3-6)
Building a Lasting Foundation
Supported by a sense of safety, deep connection to their teachers, and respectful friendships with classmates, Lower School girls spend their days in an environment of joyful learning.
Lower School students are free to be themselves while learning how to understand, value, and work closely with others. Their committed teachers are experienced, innovative, creative, passionate, and deeply nurturing educators, who not only help students master subject matter, but understand and identify their own emotions, setting the stage for productive discovery. Students leave for Middle School knowing who they are as a learner and how to move toward accomplishing their ambitions and dreams in meaningful ways throughout their academic journey at Holton.

Lower School teachers deeply know their students! With strong content knowledge and understanding of the developmental needs of their students,
Lower School teachers create an engaging student-centered curriculum that allows them to meet the needs of their diverse learners.
The Student Support Team, which includes the Learning Specialist, Literacy Specialist, Math Coordinator, School Counselor, and Division Director, meet weekly with teachers to support teaching and learning. The Student Support Team works closely with teachers to create high quality learning experiences designed to challenge and support each student on their learning journey.
Students thrive academically when they are physically, mentally, and emotionally well.
Our Morning Meetings and Advisory program welcome students into the day, build community, and teach important skills such as active listening, asking thoughtful questions, and contemplating diverse perspectives. Check-ins throughout the day help students be in tune with their emotions and be empathetic towards the feelings of others. Daily recess is essential for giving students time to explore the outdoors and enjoy free choice play.
Through our Learn Well, Lead Well, Live Well Seminar program, students learn to take care of their physical health, build a positive identity, and develop the skills to build strong relationships and support healthy conflict. Our robust Physical Education program allows students to build foundational skills while exploring a variety of sports with the goal that all students find meaningful ways to stay active throughout their adult life.
In Lower School, we believe that our youngest students don’t need to wait to be leaders but instead are ready right now to make the world a better place.
Throughout our curriculum, we develop the skills necessary to be a positive changemaker including collaboration, resilience, problem solving, critical thinking, valuing diversity, and exploring perspectives.
From making sandwiches for Martha’s Table, to advocating for a chosen organization at the Helen Poon Community Engagement Fair, to helping collect and prepare bikes for shipment around the world, our students learn about the various organizations we support, the underlying systems that cause the need, and engage with their local community.
In school, students have the opportunity to lead through running for and representing their homeroom in student council, sharing at Gathering, speaking at school events, and assisting the school community by acting as safety patrols.
