ADA Compliance
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, as amended (ADA) protects qualified persons with disabilities from discrimination in many areas of postsecondary education including admission, academics and research. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, prohibits discrimination based on disability status in educational programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance.

UT Health San Antonio is committed to providing equal access and opportunity for all employees, applicants, students, trainees, patients, other members of the university community and individuals who access services or programs of the university in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations, including the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (“ADA”), as amended. Accommodations may be provided to an individual with disabilities for access to university facilities to perform the essential functions of their job and/or to participate in university academic programs, services and activities. To ensure compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act, as amended, and state civil rights laws, UT Health San Antonio has developed policies prohibiting discrimination based on disability status. The Office of Educational Support Services administers the academic disability accommodation request process and is responsible for establishing procedures and practices with respect to academic disability accommodation across the university.

Things to consider before applying for academic accommodations (click to see more details)
An academic ADA request could take
3-4 weeks
to process or
potentially longer
should additional interactive process meetings be necessary. Please be advised that any request received after 5 pm or on a Saturday or Sunday will be considered received the next business day.
Healthcare provider documentation should contain applicable information which
must
include the following: diagnosis or condition; description of the limitation(s) and/or impact(s) of the condition(s); and outline of how the requested accommodations directly reduce or alleviate those condition(s), limitation(s), and/or impact(s). For more information, please review the documentation guidelines tab below.
The Office of Educational Support Services reserves the rights to request additional healthcare provider documentation when deemed necessary.
Accommodations are not retroactive; Accommodations are active once approved and feasibly implemented.
An interactive process may be required to reach an agreement regarding reasonable accommodations.

Documentation guidelines (click to see more details)
Specific, detailed diagnosis for each physical or mental impairment, substantiated by DSM-V (for psychological) or ICD-10 (for medical) designation.
Statement regarding whether each impairment is permanent or temporary; if temporary, the expected duration of the impairment.
Information as to how each impairment directly and currently impacts the individual regarding the physical, emotional, cognitive, or other limitations, and the level of severity the physical or mental impairment impacts the individual’s major life activities (for example, walking, hearing, seeing, learning, communicating, breathing, etc.)
The impact the impairment has in the context of the student’s applicable learning environment.
How are the impairments mitigated, corrected, or managed by assistive devices (such as hearing aids and walkers), medications, treatments, or other coping mechanisms?
If a student is taking medication to treat conditions, note any possible or existing side effects and how these may impact the daily functioning and classroom environment.
Specific recommendations for reasonable accommodations (such as extended testing time, auxiliary aid, etc.) are necessary for equal access in the academic environment. (Note: This does not ensure the specific requested accommodation will be provided.)
