Hetty van Gurp
My hooked mats have evolved over the past decade from functional floor mats to more whimsical interpretations of people I admire and places I love. Big Tancook Island has a long and rich legacy of rug hooking. When we moved here 5 years ago, the house we purchased was filled with hooked mats, some close to 100 years old. While I had been hooking mats for years, my enthusiasm for this art form was rejuvenated by these traditional mats and their time-honoured history. As I became acquainted with my Tancook neighbours and listened to their stories, I felt inspired to depict a glimpse into their lives through my hooked mats. This “Hooked on Tancook” collection represents my love of Big Tancook Island - its people, lifestyle and natural beauty. They pay homage to the rich culture of rug hooking on Tancook and the charming, resourceful, resilient and good-natured people who make this such an enchanting place to live. The mats in this collection mats are made using 100% wool on linen backing. The wool is a combination of recycled wool clothing and hand-dyed new wool.
Jane Steele
Jane Steele
is the owner of River House Rug Hooking in Petite Riviere, Lunenburg County Nova Scotia which is celebrating its 10th birthday this year.  Jane moved to Nova Scotia 12 years ago, leaving behind a career in the London (UK) fashion industry working in textile print, colour and design.  She was introduced to rug hooking by Dr Marie Elwood, then chief curator of the Museum of Nova Scotia.
Having been obsessed with all things textile since a very young age, Jane took to rug hooking immediately.  Her design output is wide and varied, and her inspiration comes from international travel, exposure to museums and art galleries in cities all over the world, and now by the natural beauty of Nova Scotia. She explores different techniques, textures, materials and colour combinations to create highly original and imaginative pieces.
