About Memorial Hall
Memorial Hall was built as the art gallery for the 1876 Centennial Exposition, the first World’s Fair to be held in the United States in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the nation.
Construction on Memorial Hall began in 1874 and was completed in 1876. Over 200 buildings were constructed for the Centennial Exposition; Memorial Hall is the only major building remaining from the Centennial, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
Over the past 150 years, Memorial Hall has served as a museum, office space, a police station, and a community center. Memorial Hall has been home to Please Touch Museum, Philadelphia’s only children’s museum, since 2008.
Artifacts in Memorial Hall
Two unique artifacts rooted in Philadelphia history are a must-see for your event guests.
Dentzel Carousel
Built in the early 1900s, the Dentzel Carousel debuted at Woodside Park just 10 miles from the Museum, and features hand carved animals and chariots with a paint scheme reminiscent of a century ago. It’s a must-ride experience.
Centennial Fairgrounds Model
Crafted in 1889, the model was constructed by skilled craftspeople using maps and architectural drawings of the original fairgrounds. All 200 buildings are hand-carved in wood and painted in the same colors as the original structures.
