Professor Danladi Slim Matawal
is a distinguished Nigerian Civil Engineer and the newly appointed Pro-Chancellor of Joseph Ayo Babalola University. He is a seasoned academic, administrator, and researcher with a long record of service in higher education and national development. He chaired his maiden Governing Council meeting on Thursday, 9 April 2026.
Born on 30 October 1955 in Plateau State, Nigeria, Professor Matawal began his education at Nigerian Army Primary School, Plateau State, and later attended Government College, Keffi, Nasarawa State, where he obtained his West African School Certificate in 1968. He proceeded to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he graduated with First Class Honours in Civil Engineering (B.Eng.) between 1974 and 1978. In 1980, he won a Commonwealth Scholarship to Imperial College, University of London, where he obtained a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering in 1981. He later earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Civil Engineering from the University of Lagos in 1992. Professor Matawal began his professional career at Plateau State Polytechnic in 1983 as Director of Works. In 1987, he joined Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, as a Lecturer II in the Department of Civil Engineering and rose through the ranks to become a Professor in 1999.

He has served the university in several leadership positions, including Director of the Centre for Distance Learning, Dean of Engineering and Technology, and Dean of the Postgraduate School.
In 2011, he was appointed Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI), a federal agency under the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Professor Matawal has also received notable recognition for his contributions to engineering and education. His honours and professional memberships include the Raw Material Research and Development Agency Award, Fellowship of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering, Fellowship of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, and membership of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Nigerian Institute of Management Science, and the Solar Energy Society of Nigeria.
