Discovering What’s Next: Stevenson Students Explore Colleges Across the Country
At Stevenson, preparing students for life after graduation is about far more than completing applications – it’s about helping them discover who they are, what they value, and where they can thrive. One of the most meaningful ways students begin that journey is through Stevenson’s college tours, where juniors experience campuses firsthand and explore the many possibilities that await them after Stevenson.
Each year, Stevenson students travel to colleges and universities across the country as part of the school’s College Center program, gaining insight into campus life, academic opportunities, and the many paths they can pursue after graduation.
Recently, groups of Stevenson juniors returned from tours through the Mid-Atlantic and Pacific Northwest, where they visited a diverse range of institutions, from liberal arts colleges to large research universities and vibrant college towns.
Together, the tours offered students the chance to walk miles across campuses, attend admissions sessions, connect with current college students and Stevenson alumni, and begin imagining what their own college experiences might look like.
Seeing Colleges Firsthand
During the Mid-Atlantic tour, students explored an array of universities and colleges, including Princeton University, Drexel University, the University of Pennsylvania, Villanova University, Loyola University Maryland, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland, Georgetown University, the University of Richmond, the University of Virginia, North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Elon University and High Point University.
Students attended information sessions, participated in student panels, and toured historic campuses and college towns. At Johns Hopkins University, they enjoyed dinner with Stevenson alumni Abbie Zhang ’24, Michelle Wang ’25 and Gabriel Hao ’24, who shared insights about their college experiences and how Stevenson prepared them for the transition.
In North Carolina, conversations with engineering students at North Carolina State University highlighted how curiosity and initiative can open doors at any institution, while a student panel at UNC Chapel Hill allowed Stevenson students to ask thoughtful questions about academics, campus culture and student life.
Meanwhile, on the Pacific Northwest tour, students explored another distinctive group of institutions across Oregon and Washington. Visits included Reed College, Lewis & Clark College, Willamette University, Oregon State University, the University of Oregon, the University of Puget Sound, Seattle University and the University of Washington.
At several campuses, students had the chance to reconnect with Stevenson alumni currently attending those universities. Hearing directly from graduates such as Michaela Miller ’23, Kai Carlson ’25, Nathan Poggmeyer ’23 and Robin Gonzalez ’24 offered valuable perspective on college life and reinforced how well Stevenson prepares students for the academic challenges ahead.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Across these tours, students experienced far more than just campus visits. They explored new cities and college towns, shared meals in campus dining halls, and spent time reflecting on what they liked (and didn’t like) about each school.
They also represented Stevenson exceptionally well throughout the trips. Admissions officers and tour guides frequently commented on the students’ engagement, thoughtful questions and genuine curiosity.
Just as importantly, the tours encouraged students to think more deeply about what they want in their college experience: academically, socially and personally.
A Hallmark of the Stevenson Experience
Experiences like these are a defining of Stevenson’s personalized college counseling program, which supports students throughout the entire college search process. Through campus visits, individual counseling and opportunities to connect with alumni, students gain the perspective and confidence they need to make thoughtful decisions about their future.
While the tours cover thousands of miles and many campuses, their purpose is simple: to help Stevenson students better understand themselves and the many possibilities ahead.
And for many students, the journey is just beginning.
Additional college tours will take place throughout the year, continuing to expand students’ understanding of the wide and exciting landscape of higher education.
