Get your child and family ready for a new school year with helpful and insightful tips from
Jalene Shoener, MD

Back to School Health Checklist
Getting your child ready for a new school year is an exciting time. With each new school year comes a fresh start and some challenges. Whether it is adjusting to a new schedule, development milestones, or navigating social dynamics.
To ensure they start the year off healthy and ready, consider prioritizing the following:
Annual Health and Wellness Checkups
Schedule a visit with your child’s pediatrician for a routine check-up, school physicals, sport physicals, vaccinations, and any other necessary screenings. Make sure any ongoing health conditions are managed and updated in their health records.
At your child’s doctor appointment, take the time to discuss any concerns you may have about your child’s development or additional support they may need at school. The doctor can provide valuable guidance and resources to ensure your child receives the appropriate care and support to thrive both academically and personally.
Getting Back on Routine/Starting New Routines
Establishing a consistent routine is crucial for a smooth transition into the new school year. Here are some back-to-school routine tips for routine:
Sleep – Start by gradually adjusting bedtimes and wake-up times a few weeks before school begins to help your child adapt to the new schedule.
Screen Time – Start to taper off your child’s screen time, and try to create a daily routine that includes time for homework, extracurricular activities, and relaxation.
Meals – Prepare nutritious meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner to help keep your child energized through the school day.
Mental & Emotional Readiness
Mental and emotional preparedness is just as important as physical health. Make time to talk to your child about their feelings regarding the new school year. Encourage them to express any excitement or concerns they may have about school.
Discuss strategies for dealing with stress and foster an open line of communication, so your child feels comfortable sharing their thoughts and concerns with you throughout the year.
