Preserving the History of the Vale of Pewsey
The Pewsey Heritage Centre collections highlight the social, agricultural and industrial aspects of the Vale of Pewsey over the past 150 years or so, a period which includes the rise, fall and rise again of the Kennet and Avon Canal, and the Railway with its rapid links to both east and west.
Welcome to the Pewsey Heritage Centre
Find out about the history of the beautiful Vale of Pewsey
The Pewsey Heritage Centre collection is housed in what was once the foundry building of Whatley & Hiscock, agricultural engineers. Indeed, the machinery of this firm formed the basis for the Pewsey Heritage Centre collection. When engineering work ceased, the local history society set up a museum to conserve the heavy machinery. This has grown with items from Pewsey and the Vale into the resource you can see today.

Thank you for making us so welcome when we visited on Tuesday morning ... our five year old grandson loved exploring all the artifacts and hearing all about how they were made and used ...

Family history discovered
With info from Ancestry, the 1901 census and help from the people at the Pewsey Heritage Center, we located the house of my grandfather, who was born in Pewsey, England in 1887. He emigrated to Ohio and then Pittsburgh in 1910. The staff drew us a walking map and we walked down some quiet paths and located three thatched roof cottages. My grandfather lived in one of them, they determined, with several other families as a young man. Thank you, thank you, thank you Pewsey Heritage Center. Also, the church where he was baptized.

A real treasure
A wonderful little local museum, set in a beautiful and atmospheric building. The staff are highly informative and friendly. Some well researched temporary displays as well as a fascinating permanent exhibition - a real glimpse into rural history. Thoughtful additions also pique children's curiosity.
