Research groups are faculty and student-led initiatives that invite students, scholars and practitioners from within and outside of CEU to engage with specialized topics within the broader research areas. Research groups organize events, discussions and workshops to enable free exchange of knowledge and open debate.

CEU Science for Society Hub
The CEU Science for Society Hub promotes citizen science and socially responsive research activities conducted with and for civil society organizations (CSOs). It collects ideas and requests from NGOs, communities and citizens and supports developing these into research questions and research projects implemented in a participatory and collaborative way. By tackling real-world social issues and challenges, both students and partner organizations benefit.

In line with CEU’s commitment to high-quality research, our faculty obtains over 10 million EUR in new research grants every academic year with the assistance of the
Academic Cooperation and Research Support Office
. CEU researchers collaborate with nearly 100 universities on joint research projects, most of which receive funding from the European Framework Programs and Austrian public funding agencies.

Research-Based PhD Programs at CEU
Central European University in Vienna offers 11 interdisciplinary doctoral programs that strategically blend core concepts from humanities, social sciences, public policy, data science, historical studies and legal studies to generate new approaches to theoretical and practical education in the chosen area of expertise.
One-third of CEU students study in PhD-level programs. Most receive full funding, undergo rigorous training in tools and methods of qualitative and quantitative academic research, and actively develop original research projects. Doctoral programs are delivered by all
