Azad Memorabilia Museum
There is a long-standing demand from various quarters to make the house, in which Maulana Abul
Kalam Azad lived in Kolkata for a long time in his last days, into a Memorial Museum, more
particularly from the centenary year of Maulana Azad i.e. 1988. With the establishment of Maulana
Abut Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies, the task was taken up by the Institute which was able to
get possession of the building at No. 5 Asbraf Mistri Lane, Kolkata, from the Govt. of West Bengal, which acquired the said premises after making suitable compensation to the owners.
Since the building has not been maintained properly for a very long time, it was in a bad shape when the Institute took its possession.
The Govt. of India bas issued necessary sanction for its renovation and repairs and also for establishment of the Azad Memorabilia Museum. The work of renovation and repairs has been entrusted to the CPWD which has earlier surveyed the building and prepared the preliminary civil and electrical estimates.
The Maulana Azad Memorabilia Museum will be established once the repair /renovation work is completed. Meanwhile, steps are being taken for collection of materials on Maulana Azad.
A marble plaque was installed on the tomb (after necessary repair / renovation) of zulekha Begum, wife of Maulana Azad who died on 9 April 1943, when Maulana was in jail during the period of India' s freedom struggle, and was buried at Manicktalla Burial Ground, Kotkata, in his absence. The marble plaque was unveiled by Mr. Mohd. Salim, Hon' ble Minister for Minorities' Development and welfare, SEUU, Youth Service and Technical Education, Govt. of West Bengal, on 22nd April 2002, in the presence of Prof. Devendra Kaushik Chairman - Executive Council MAKAIAS, Prof.JayantaKumar Roy, vice - chairman Executive Council MAKAIAS, Mr Feroz Bakht Ahmeb, Shri A. S. Malihabadi and other dignitaries. The function was presided over by Hon' ble Justice K. M. Yusuf, Chairman - West Bengal Minorities Commission.
