AFKMED's VISIT TO NACA
PAN prevention Workshop. Nairobi, Kenya
The Pan-Prevention Workshop of the South-to-South Learning Network (SSLN) took place in Nairobi, Kenya from 1st to 4th March 2026. The workshop, organized by the SSLN brought together over 150 Country Champions from 16 nations under one roof to share peer learning and practical actions for HIV prevention. Africans gathered to learn from promising practices across the globe. Key topics included protecting prevention gains amid resource constraints, leveraging new technologies and integrated models of care for HIV, TB, and malaria.
Mr. Francis Agbo-Director SKM NACA led the Nigerian team. Other Delegates from Nigeria included – Ezinne Okey-Uchendu-Deputy Director-NACA, Dr. Chioma Ukanwa-Deputy Director NASCP, Hiddayat Yahaya- NACA, Dr. Bunmi Amoo- APIN, Mrs Comfort Ochigbo-IHVN, Sarah Godwin- APYIN Coordinator and Josephine Eseme- Coordinator KP secretariat.
Mrs Ezinne Okey-Uchendu led discussions on “Our current leadership and stewardship model would be unable to sustain HIV prevention if all external funding disappeared today.” She presented what works (Stewardship and strategy) and where nations should focus attention including domestic funding , multi-sectorial approach, Using a Total Market Approach (TMA) for our programme – Identifying what will be paid for by the people who can afford it and what can be subsidized or free and creating a shift from being heavily dependent on commodities to closing the taps early- Giving Adolescents andYoung People(AYP) the right agency and skills using values and life building skills.

Prevention of mother-child transmission of HIV/AIDS is possible
HIV medicines reduce the amount of HIV in the body. Having less HIV in the body reduces a woman’s risk of passing HIV to her child during pregnancy and childbirth. Having less HIV in the body also protects the woman’s health.
Some of the HIV medicine passes from the pregnant woman to her unborn baby across the placenta (also called the afterbirth). This transfer of HIV medicine protects the baby from HIV infection
