Philosophy
The philosophy of the Nursing degree is hinged on the belief that man is a biopsychosocial being and his needs are the focus of all nursing activities in its efforts towards achieving a high level of wellness. The philosophy of the Department of Nursing Science of the College of Health Sciences aligns with the philosophy of education, healthcare, and nursing in Nigeria. They are:
The Department of Nursing believes that preparation for professional nursing should consist of liberal and professional education leading to a Bachelor’s degree and should take place within a university. Such a nursing programme should be an integral part of the university education programme, utilising, and supporting all facilities and activities of the institution.
The nursing profession believes that man is a biological, spiritual, social, and psychological individual unit whose needs are an inherent part of his nature and are therefore affected by factors within his environment.
It is believed that nursing is primarily concerned with human life. The quality of the health of the individual, family, group, or community is affected by nursing professionals available. Nursing is directed towards the achievement of better health and consequently as a professional practice. It must also be firmly based on knowledge derived from biological, physical and behavioural sciences relevant to the understanding of human nature.
The department believes that a health team in which the individual, the family and the community play significant roles is the most effective approach to the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health.
Professional nursing education built upon the theoretical base that seeks to develop continually self-directed practitioners who will advance and test knowledge on which practice is based.
