The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) plays a central role in administering the immigration system of the United States.
Administration of immigration benefits is the responsibility of
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services
(USCIS).
In order to have a liaison between the public and DHS on immigration benefits matters, Congress created the
Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman
, which operates independently from USCIS.
