Historically, most ecological assessments of aquatic ecosystems have focused on determining whether individual water bodies are supporting desired aquatic life conditions. However, agencies also have to report to Congress on overall status and trends in ecological condition across all streams within their jurisdiction. Ideally, assessments of ecological integrity would be both precise enough to inform site-specific management decisions and also be readily scaled up to accurately characterize watershed-, regional-, and national-scale conditions.
