Economic Impact of VinFast Automotive in North Carolina
VinFast, a five-year-old Vietnamese automaker, plans to extend its global footprint into North America by establishing the first automotive manufacturing plant in North Carolina. This research evaluates the state’s $1.2 billion incentive package for VinFast’s electric vehicle manufacturing project. IMPLAN software is used to assess the direct, indirect, and induced economic impacts of VinFast's manufacturing plant on the local economy. From 2022 to 2025, this factory is expected to generate $15.3 billion in output, support over 26,550 jobs and contribute $4.8 billion in GDP to Chatham County and the surrounding economy. Assuming that resources are easily available and that there is consumer demand for the vehicles, the estimated tax income generated by VinFast's operations should repay the public coffers within five years.

The Union County Public School (UCPS) system is most commonly cited for the academic, athletic and artistic achievements of its students. This study looks at UCPS through the lens of the local economy. At the end of 2021, it was the largest employer in the county. The approximately 5,000 faculty and staff served around 40,200 students at 53 campuses. Enrollment grew by 27% in the fifteen years from 2006 to 2021, which driving construction at multiple sites.

Since the construction of the Monroe Bypass, there has been community speculation on what will be built on the vacant land around it. While many acres are turning into residential neighborhoods, other properties may be used for business. One consideration is how a new business or industry would interact with the existing economic structure.

Job losses can spike during a pandemic. While the US unemployment rate has fallen since the 2020 peak, questions remain. In a simulation of economic impact, ECON 412 students researched the biggest employers in Union and Mecklenburg Counties and examined the extent to which the counties could be impacted if these firms undertook extensive job cuts.
