Inter-Hospital Transfers
When one of our departments is at capacity, our emergency teams work with our other UChicago Medicine AdventHealth hospitals — including UChicago Medicine’s Level I emergency department and trauma center — to get you the attention you need once you’re stabilized.
Before a transfer occurs, our doctors will complete a detailed verbal hand-off to inform the receiving hospital of your needs and ensure continuity of care. Our ambulance service is included in the planning process so that your transport goes smoothly and efficiently, getting you to another hospital where you will receive the same compassionate, whole-person care. During a heart emergency, every second counts. We offer the latest in emergency heart care, including newly upgraded cardiac catheterization labs and an expert team ready to treat you at a moment's notice.
Our emergency heart care services include:
Arrhythmia care for abnormal heart rhythms
Cardiac catheterization, such as balloon angioplasty
Heart surgery
Sophisticated cardiovascular diagnostic tests
Our physicians respond quickly to heart attacks and other cardiac emergencies in their critical early stages to improve outcomes. We're also better able to monitor patients when it's unclear if they're experiencing a coronary event, which ensures they're neither sent home too early nor needlessly admitted.

Level II Trauma Centers
We have four Level II trauma centers that provide 24-hour, comprehensive emergency heart care. We also offer access to UChicago Medicine’s Level I emergency department and trauma center.
Fast Transport Services
We provide helicopter and private ambulance transfers for patients who need them.
Seamless After-Hospital Care
Whether you need more help at home, extra therapy or nursing care, we are here for you. And, you don't have to go far. Our nursing and rehabilitation centers are close by, and our home health services can help you recover comfortably.
Advanced Stroke Care
When a stroke happens, fast action can mean the difference between life and death, and a total return to function or lifelong disability.
Our UChicago Medicine AdventHealth hospitals offer nationally renowned stroke care 24 hours a day. We’ve earned Primary Stroke Center designations and several Gold Seals of Approval™ from The Joint Commission, reflecting our dedication to immediate stroke care, lifesaving diagnoses and advanced treatments.
Our dedicated stroke program includes highly specialized neurologists, certified emergency nurses and other clinicians who are trained in treating strokes.
Level II Trauma Centers
Our emergency rooms are equipped with trauma capabilities to handle critical injuries, severe skeletal damage, blunt force and penetrating wounds and more.
Several of our locations are designated as Level II Trauma Centers, the highest designation awarded in Illinois. We also offer access to UChicago Medicine’s Level I emergency department and trauma center.
Our trauma care includes:
24-hour surgical coverage
Advanced diagnostic technology, including high-speed, 64-slice CT scans
Coordinated care after treatment, including comprehensive rehabilitation services
Specially trained nurses with certification in trauma care
SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) Program
Our regional SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) program is comprised of specially trained nurses who provide medical forensic care for patients presenting for sexual assault, abuse, interpersonal violence and/or human trafficking. The nurses provide trauma-informed, patient-centered care while collaborating with a team of providers, pharmacists, law enforcement and crisis advocates. Our hospitals are recognized as treatment facilities for patients aged 13 and older. Those who are under age 12 can be medically evaluated and treated and are then referred to University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital for a medical forensic exam.

What To Expect
Teens and Adults Aged 13 and Older:
When you arrive at the emergency room, you will be triaged and brought to a safe, private room. The staff will contact the available SANE nurse to conduct the medical forensic exam and evidence collection. An advocate can accompany you during this process and can provide additional resources for you.
The emergency staff and SANE can test and treat you for the following conditions:
Sexual Transmitted Infections (STIs): chlamydia; gonorrhea; trichomonas; human immunodeficiency virus (HIV); syphilis; human papillomavirus (HPV)
Pregnancy
Pain
You have the option to decline any portion of the exam. We are required to offer the medical forensic services within 168 hours of the assault. We will not proceed with any examination without your explicit consent.
As mandated reporters, we are required to notify law enforcement of any assault or abuse. For minors under age 17, we are required to notify Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS).
You have the option to report to law enforcement, to request the emergency or SANE staff to report to law enforcement or remain anonymous while collecting the evidence. The staff will not share any identifying information without your consent.

Children Aged 12 and Younger:
When you arrive at the emergency room, you will be checked by a nurse and brought to a safe, private room. Your care team will talk with a safe parent or guardian and start the referral process to Comer Children’s Hospital for a medical forensic examination. We must offer medical forensic services within 72 hours of the incident. You will be safely transferred to Comer Children's Hospital either by ambulance or by a private vehicle.
The emergency room staff will medically evaluate you for any dangerous conditions that need immediate care.
As mandated reporters, we are required to notify DCFS of any suspected abuse or assault.
You may also be referred to a local Child Advocacy Center for further investigation and evaluation.

Follow-Up Care:
The SANE or emergency room staff can offer you follow-up services through trauma-informed primary care providers. Your caring provider will support you after the exam and assist with additional physical, mental and emotional needs. Follow-up is critical in monitoring for changes in your physical health, including STI treatment and development.

The Fast Track ER at UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Bolingbrook streamlines care for patients with less urgent needs, such as minor injuries, mild infections or simple procedures. Physician assistants and nurse practitioners ensure efficient, focused care for your needs, resulting in shorter wait times.
